    Recommendations on what to equip?

I've got some pretty amazing gear and I rarely make it to DL40. I'm sure everyone will say I should have dived deeper by now, but I'm pretty conservative because I die A LOT, mostly because I get excited and forget this is a turn-based game. Impulse control is not my strong point.

Anyway, I'm wearing a RoD +14 that gives me RIDICULOUS damage, but then I found a RoS +6 and I'm not sure if it's worth it given I can cast haste self at will. Am I wearing the optimal combination of items? Is it stupid that I'm still carrying around a Staff of Speed when I can cast Haste Self? I'm a little overwhelmed.

This is a very powerful @ for 2350', and the melee damage is crazy. Speed, detection, a large HP pool, teleport other and the key resistances (AFCLP, Free Action) are your main survival tools.
-Equip Ring of Speed instead of Harod, at least until you get another source of speed. The immunity to cold is nice, but not as critical as speed - avoid cold (and shards)-based beasts in the meantime to keep your potions from being shattered. (I'd also suggest carrying cure critical wounds instead of those rods, but that's a matter of taste.)
-You probably have enough SP to be able to have Haste up all the time. Do this. (Create a shortcut key for "cast haste" if you haven't yet.) You can then stash your staves of speed, and perhaps pick up an extra Teleportation instead, just in case.
-Teleport other is very powerful. Of course, it's harder to gauge when to use it if you don't know all the monsters inside out. But those wands should be in your backpack, especially as you've got lightning immunity and they are safe from being vaporized.

    Good luck.

Agree with the previous comment. You are doing phenomenally well with that character. Consider carrying resistance potions. Losing Resistance spells is one of the three biggest nerfs for Ranger and Rogue classes, the others being: loss of haste (rogue) and loss of brand weapons. (Loss of teleport other isn't as big, because there is plenty to be found in the dungeon by the time you can reliably cast the spell.)

      Edit:

Also, your selection of gear in the pack is a sub-optimal. Too many things that are nice to have, leaving too little room for things that are essential.
      Things to drop:
      * Leave ?Banishment, *Heal* at home for the final fights. If you want to banish in the dungeon, use a staff.
      * Way too many damage wands. Rely on arrows for damage at a distance.
      * Random scroll Protection from Evil. Read this off the floor and go on.
      DO carry:
      * Some of those wands of Teleport Other. One rod is not enough to rely on, and wands have lower fail rate.
      * Guaranteed escape. (?Teleport Level, ? *Destruction*.) Teleport self after DL 50 is a sure way to lose, in the long run. Use it only if you are desperate (say, you run into an Ethereal Dragon or Titan without pConf.) In general, rely on Teleport other and evasion to avoid monsters you decline to fight, and avoid fights where you need to escape.
      * Potions of resistances. These are a game changer, making Smaug & friends far less dangerous. Same
      * Consider carrying !Heroism or other buffs, not only to resist fear. Buffs make a difference for characters with bad melee skill like rangers.

Interesting! I've never taken potions of resistance seriously. I'm intrigued to see what difference it makes when I start carrying them. The damage wands are mostly to provide area attacks, but given my current shooting speed they probably aren't as useful as I think they are. Swapping out speed for Harod does lose me quite a bit of mana, but I haven't been hitting my limit much anyway so I suppose that's probably fine.

I'll swap some gear around and see how things go. Thanks for the advice, y'all!

Resistance potions (or elemental rings) have a lot of value if you can't kill big elemental breathers fast, and you don't have a spell to replace them. Single resisted Fire/Cold/Elec top out at 533 damage. That is enough to kill your character in 2 turns from 100% health, and is more than a potion of healing can cure. Cutting this to 174 (closer to 100 for Smaug) turns the element into a non-threat.

With the spell, you can keep resistance up whenever there is even a small threat, and you can take down breathers without much effort. You have to be a conservative with the potions. The rings are arguably better since you can't run out of uses, but swaps requiring recharging are somewhat annoying.

I might add one thing to these great previous tips: Carry wand/rod of Slow Monster. Zapping one at a monster is a very good way of spending your first turn in a tough fight. It lasts long and almost every monster, unique or not, is affected. Only ones I've seen resisting it are Aether Hounds, Aether Vortices and some of those nasty new tree monsters. I don't know how much it exactly slows the monster down, but I'm guessing somewhere around 4-5 speed points. That's enough to be a significant effect.
            Good luck!

PS: Nice to see someone actually getting a good early Smeagol drop

So far so good. I've found Boots of Elvenkind (+4 Stealth, +5 Speed), so I swapped Areneno for those, and I also found a Ring of Speed +7, so swapped for the +6, giving me a permanent speed of +17. Does that change any of your recommendations?

I also found this, which I think will be an improved weapon once I get a few more ?EW (Damage).

It's not bad, but your current weapon is better. Realistically you're not going to get more than 20-30 more damage per round out of it.

Interesting! I will take these things more seriously! (In fact, Resist Heat just saved my ass when I ran into Itangast on DL52, I'm pretty sure. I was able to TP him away, scope out how many other uniques were on the level, and nab a few things.)

This isn't *quite* the best-equipped character I've ever had -- I actually got a dwarf priest down to level 99 once but the demons and undead did me in. In that instance though I hadn't run into many of the uniques of that type and they all showed up on that level together. I wasn't smart enough to bail out. I have learned from the experience.

But I gotta say, I have no complaints about this character except that I'd *really* like those last few resistances filled out.

ETA: getting protection from confusion so early in the game really has been HUGE. That's one of the hardest ones to find, in my experience!

OK, here's where I am *now*. I'm wondering if I should swap out some gear, particularly to gain sound resistance since I narrowly escaped a pit of great wyrms of thunder just now. But I've already killed a few major uniques (Ren, Akhorahil, Makhar, Saruman, Smaug, Scatha), so I'm feeling pretty confident. It's just driving me crazy that I have immunities sitting unused in my house, but I don't dare give up confusion resistance (from Ithir) (though I could swap out the red dragon scale for Fingondil) and I'm unsure whether I can afford to trade off speed for cold immunity from Harog.

                    Thoughts?

Go kill Sauron and Morgoth. You could do with a few more ordinary Healing potions, except you have an astonishing 22 !*Healing*. GWoThunder just are bad news all around. It is no surprise that you can't fight them easily.

Swapping out the helm only makes sense if you get con somewhere else. As for the confusion resistance you actually have 100% save. I think you can still be confused in melee? Otherwise you don't need it.

If this is your first time towards Morgoth, then you need protection from recklessness and protection from boredom. Those are the primary causes of death.

You have pretty much everything else covered for your journey except for blindness (ouch) and, less importantly, nexus and nether. Immunities are nice but not essential. You have plenty of consumables, but will hopefully find a better bow. Oh, nice shoes, by the way.

Note that as a Ranger you'll want to concentrate on shooting the biggest bosses to bits, so +speed will be more valuable than +damage. (In fact, your spare +8Spd ring gives you about +10% damage/round when you're hasted, as well as plenty of other benefits - how does that compare to your +14 damage ring?).

But there are plenty of nasty creatures waiting for you along the way - Smaug and Scatha will look like jokes in comparison.

I've been to DL99 once (and died with moderate heroism), but this is the deepest I've gotten since then. I know there are plenty of nasties down there! I've learned a lot about playing more tactically since then, but recklessness (and forgetting this is a turn-based game and I don't have to keep frantically mashing keys) is my #1 sin in Angband.

I remember reading here at some point that speed over +20 wasn't really worthwhile, but that hasn't been my experience, so perhaps I will try swapping speed for damage and see where that gets me. Blindness isn't so bad as I do have ESP; I've barely noticed.

It's not that speed over +20 isn't worthwhile, it just becomes harder to balance against other bonuses. The reason why +20 is so significant is that with temporary haste up that gets you to +30, which means that no monster in the game (particularly Morgoth) can get two turns in a row on you. But from +28 onwards (if I recall correctly) speed starts having diminishing returns, that is it takes more than +1 speed to get any change in how fast you actually move. Gaining more speed is helpful...but if it comes at the expense of significant amounts of HP or damage or other important abilities, it's probably not worthwhile.

For example, if you go from +30 speed to +40 speed, you're actually only 10.5% faster. So if you're sacrificing less than 10% of your damage-dealing capability to get that extra 10% speed, it's worth going for speed. If you were trading 20% damage for 10% speed, or getting less of a speed bonus, then it might not be worth doing.
