Take a look at some recent characters on the ladder that are your class, and are roughly at your character level. What are they carrying and storing? They dropped everything else.

You have to figure sone of this out for yourself.
Some things might be needed for situations I haven't run into yet - haven't heard anything about a ladder. I assume they're higher level chars?

Right there at the top of the page. Has all sorts of character, not just high level.

Look at your character screen. Resistances are binary. You already have those resists from Arvedui, so the ring is worthless. Of course every character's equipment is different. But the consumables they carry are pretty similar, for a particular class.

Moreover, while fire and cold resistances are important, a ring of resist fire and cold is the worst possible way to acquire them. There are too many better things to do with ring slots. Pretty much every character will find a shield or body armor that provides full rBase: several standarts do this, as do all ego items of resistance or elvenkind.

Ring of resist fire and cold is one of those early-game items that you drop and squelch without hesitation as soon as you find something better, as you'll never wear it again.

OK, this requires a little tactics.
If you are fighting a bunch of hounds that are significantly weaker than you, set up in a room, just around the corner:
              Code:
              ##Z##
              ##Z###
              #..Z@.
              #......
              #....
The hounds will come at you one by one; if you can kill them in one turn, they will never get a chance to breathe.
If the hounds are stronger, look for a moated room, and do the same thing in the moat. No more than two will ever be able to breathe on you at once.

If you can't do this, don't fight them. Teleport away, or leave the level, etc.
Note: There is another way to fight them, but it's more dangerous. Get down to less than 1/2 UP, and they will come after you, even around a corner in a hallway.

I went to a level, found a trap, tried to disarm it and it went off - turns out, it summoned two dragons.

The first was a 'mature red dragon'. This was the first battle my warrior decided to get away from - used the teleport staff and cast word of recall. Yikes.

The dragon got one hit, not quite sure how much but maybe 40 to 50 - who knows what effects they'd have or how many attacks they'd get in a round.

I assume stat rings aren't worth it over damage rings? I saw a strength +2 and found a constitution +1 but not using them.

Wow, I just ran across a big room filled with an acolyte type monster on every square, perhaps 50 of them.

I started to kill a few - they were shouting some power word spell at me and in one cast my health went from like over 300 to 205.

I backed off to try to fight one at a time and other monsters like a 5-headed hydra also came and poisoned a lot.

Deciding whether to try to stay and kill stuff or word of recall out - this looks quite dangerous to stay.

I've teleported to a hallway to drink potions and can fight them or recall.

It's a lot safer to recall but loot is already dropping and I suspect there's a lot more good loot to be had if I can kill them.

                    My current HP are 127/355.

I could quaff a few critical heal... hm.

Hm leaning toward leaving, since I used my last charge of speed to get the heal in and by the time I get back speed will be gone.

But darn, treasure locator shows a lot of treasure to be had on the level that'll be missed... Hm...

Mature red dragon is no threat if you have res fire as you do. And of course you can drink some CCW in a fight with a huge mob with OK drops. But that is not your issue. Getting in front of the door of a pit full of spellcasters or breathers is a good way to die.

OK, apart from THAT room, I walked around where I teleported to and treasure locator shows another huge room with at least 20 treasures in it, that has no doors - but I've little doubt if I tunnel in, it's filled with monsters, so yet another dangerous option, apart from the creatures probably coming from the last room.

Well I see people talking about 1-shotting mobs and saw people scared of a mature red dragon so didn't want to find out he could 1 shot - good to hear.

Ya, this room is sounding awfully dangerous - that 'power word' spell they cast alone appeared pretty terrible. Hate to miss so much loot...

So, I decided to go tunnel to yet a third area that showed a few treasure.

When I got there, there was a giant roc that got me down from 355 to 228 - and now I'm fighting a named Ogre Chieftan, Lokkak.

He got several hits in one round and now I'm 175hp... Perhaps I got myself in trouble here.

OK, that Ogre chieftan several hits a round was too much. If I had speed I might have tried, but I recalled out, unfortunately.
