How much damage do traps do?

I've come back to Angband after some time, love v4 so far and all the streamlined changes. Been trying to kill M as Mage with all races before the class/magic update, done 5 races so far, have to say it's *much* easier to win the game in a consistent way.

That said, my recent run with Gnome Mage ended quite abruptly. Was at ~1500', walked into a trap as I always do, then went from 112 hp to -201 hp from an ancient mechanism. Is it supposed to deal so much damage? Been playing since the v2 days, and I've never died so spectacularly in one hit to a trap before. I consider myself a relatively fast (real time) / careless / reckless player, I macro all my spells, spam keys constantly and run all over the dungeon, I'd find it annoying if I have to slow down and parse the traps in my path, tiptoeing around them if they can kill me in one shot.

    Code:
      [Angband 4.1.2 Character Dump]

From the look of it you were earthquaked, the game tried to move you to an adjacent free square, found none & dealt a second lot of damage on top.

Thanks, good to know, didn't know before, guess that's one more thing to look out for

Is this by design though, or was I just really unfortunate? Since playing v4, I've found "unfair", hard to avoid deaths have been drastically reduced / removed compared to v3 e.g. staircase breath, offscreen death, etc, etc. That's why I was moderately surprised to find myself dying in one turn from walking into a trap at near full HP.

[edit] ignoring the near unavoidable deaths at 50'-100'

That is very unlucky - the trap has a minimum depth of DL30.

And not just the minimum depth, but also the odds of getting crushed by an earthquake are very small. As wobbly said, that can only happen if the game wants to generate a wall on the tile you're on and there are no free tiles around it (possibly because the earthquake already generated walls there). Normally you just get 10d4 damage if a wall gets generated on top of you (or 1/3rd of the time you nimbly dodge and take no damage). If there's no safe adjacent tiles, however, you take 300 damage. Relevant code here.

It is also a very entertaining death. I'd laugh, if it happened to me. So I'd say, this is WAD. And yeah. For LOW-HP classes I guess ancient mechanisms are something to watch for.
