    mixed blessing idea

for a flag on an item or temporary effect from a mushroom or something:

sustain speed: resist slowing and inertia, but also prevents & cancels temporary hasting. If preventing temporary hasting isn't enough of a drawback, maybe make it reduce the amount of bonus you get from equipment that gives you speed. (I will probably be implementing this for DaJAngband, but it'll be pretty rare.)

I was going to post this in the other thread about mixed blessing stuff, but I couldn't find it.

Great idea. Subtle but not insignificant. I wonder if it's already in Un, but much bigger things are in Un, Tome and others, e.g. Anchor (no teleportation), Silence (no spells, neither friendly nor unfriendly), etc.

Seconded. I'll be thinking about how to use this in FA, too.

How about if berserk potions had some sort of downside - in Crawl, for instance, when you go berserk, after your combat bonuses fade away, you're temporarily slowed (as the character has worn himself out going berserk), and I think your metabolism speeds up while berserk, too...

And to borrow a status ailment from Final Fantasy, what if you could get zombified by undead creatures or certain cursed items, rendering you unable to use most types of healing items/magic as they would hurt you? It would be neat, though perhaps out of theme for Angband, to be able to put undead to rest by casting cure on them or using potions... :P

        Other statuses/egos:
        * of Celerity - increases speed but hastens metabolism greatly; possibly sustains DEX
        * of Inertia - slows metabolism but decreases speed somewhat; possibly sustains CON (probably need a better name since inertia is an "element" :P)
        * of Mental Focus - sustains INT/WIS/CHA, "caps" STR/DEX/CON - a "capped" stat cannot be *increased* as opposed to a sustained stat which cannot be *decreased*. Since it's easier to lose stats than gain them, this one should probably have some sort of additional penalty, maybe -1 to a randomly selected one of the capped stats and a curse so you can't so easily remove it to quaff a stat gain potion!
        * of Physical Prowess - opposite of Mental Focus
        * of Bravado - resist fear, but -1 INT or WIS, or perhaps aggravation
        * of Panic - randomly induces bouts of fear, but any time character is afraid, speed increases temporarily
        * of Balance - takes the median value of your stats and grants +1 to all stats 1 point or more below that value and -1 to all stats 1 point or more above (naturally recomputed whenever your stats change); stats within less than 1 of the median are not affected. (e.g. if your stats are 10/11/13/14/15/18, this item would have no effect on the 13 and 14 since the median is 13.5 and it makes no sense to swap the two)
        * of Specialization - opposite of Balance, though stats within less than 1 of the median this time *are* affected, since you're just pushing them away from the median - stats at exactly the median though are "balanced out": if you're at 10/11/14/14/16/17 the median is 14 and the 14s are not affected, but if you're at 10/11/14/14/14/17 you get -2 to the lowest stat instead of just -1 and if you're at 10/14/14/14/16/17 you get +2 to the highest instead of just +1, so you always have 0 net gain. (Though you might run into issues with someone at a stat value of 3 or whatever the max is... hmmm...)
You read the scroll labeled NOBIMUS UPSCOTI...
You are surrounded by a stasis field!
The tengu tries to teleport, but fails!

In Un you get exhausted not after berserk, but during temporary haste, unless you rest enough. When berserk you cannot, among others, read scrolls, which is very harsh. Metabolism is always moot in Angband, even with food-stealing monsters. When town has enough food and you have WOR, food is moot. If towns do not have enough food the game becomes a gamble or has a timeout after which it becomes a gamble --- when all the guaranteed fixed food resources run out.

No HP regeneration and no healing could be nice for the Un 'Cused' status that undead often incur. I think undead are already harmed by healing potions/wands and cured by drain life in Un.
