Started a new 4.1 game today and saved it with ctrl-X. Tried to restart it a bit later and I get the error message "Parse error in randart line 2389 column 3." Looked at randart.txt and my untrained eyes didn't see anything wrong. Any way this save file can be saved? This one has been lucky with HP rolls so far and I'd kinda like to keep it. The save file and randart.txt are in the attached zip.

“We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

Highlight too close
I've had this issue for several versions. Mac version, latest 4.1.0. If I give a command such as T, w, r etc the first item on the list is highlighted, but the highlight box is too close to the letter and it is often more a matter of intuition or memory rather than being able to read the letter in question. This pertains particularly to g vs q, a vs o, m vs n.
Or is it just a matter of using the wrong font?
In these modern times is not a block highlight more de rigeur?
Still getting to grips with 4.1. too many bloody traps not noticed by a Dunedain Ranger. I've bought a pick, not so much to go mining for gold as to use to mine around traps as my Disarm ability is still only 40%.
Still just spent my hard earned on a Ring of Searching +3. Onward and Downward!Comment

Rune error
I don't quite see the point of runes in 4.1. but I have found a text error. I'm running a Dunedain Ranger and it reports I have the rune of hold constitution because I have an object. This is incorrect. I have no such object, instead I hold constitution because I'm a Dunedain. It's a Race bonus.Comment

I dont know what "it" refers to, but in the table you access from the character menu it should indicate exactly what has and has not the property of sustain constitution (at least once you have identified it); if youre Dunadan, there should be a check in the @ column which lists intrinsic properties.Comment

I have made a few randart sets and while there are reasonable amounts of launchers, not a single one has picked up multiplier. I assume you are playing 4.1.0 ?
It is possible that there is an issue with my installation; my sets used to be ridiculous, with about 80% cursed artifacts, 80% of weapons having +2 attacks and all major slays, 80% of armours having multiple off weapon slays and brands.
I downloaded anew from rephial and re-installed and the first 3 randart sets I created for test purposes dont display this bizarre behaviour (though no launchers have multiplier, and no heavy xbow launchers exist).
Since I seem to recall you having contradiced most of my observations in the recent past, I get the suspicion that we somehow play different games. The weird change in randart looks would suggest that my game is not working as intended.
Can you post a dump of your toon with that x5 launcher ?Comment

Cannot ID something i'm standing on.
What the hell happened to the ability to identify something the character is standing on? My Dunedain Ranger is standing on a mithril wand with a pack chock full. I have three scrolls of identify.
In EVERY SINGLE previous version of Angband I have ever played (I'm 52, so you can imagine) you can ID stuff you are standing on. To be frank I'm a bit surprised you cannot iD something on any grid adjacent to the character.
But no, now I can only ID it when it is buried in the bottom of my pack along with books of magic, scrolls and potions galore, a soft leather armour of resist acid, my old good mace (just found a better maul) and TWO quivers chock full of picked up good arrows (arrows of slay animal! on level 15!).
Does not compute, does not compute, does not compute.
Mac Angband 4.1.0-dirty
Addendum, now having picked the wand up i still cannot ID it. I read a scroll of identify with the wand in my pack and it tells me I have nothing to identify. I don't even know how many charges it has. WTF?Last edited by Muscleguy; August 21, 2017, 21:49.Comment

Why can't rogues steal?
I've been pondering this and related issues for a while. Why can't rogue character steal stuff from monsters? Every single blue p or h in the game can try and knick stuff of me, forcing me to hunt the blighters down and kill them with extreme prejudice to get my gold back.
there are uniques who can do it too, starting of course with Smeagol. So why not rogue characters? Imagine the joy of it, and the challenge: with enough stealth you could pilfer the dungeon and every treasure carrying monster while they sleep. Rogues could even have a special spell of 'Find treasure carriers' kin to the priest spell of Detect Evil.
And while we are at it, how come apprentices and gnome mages blind me but I can't blind them? they can confuse me, fine, i can confuse them back. A wand of confuse kept me alive, just against a cavern full of assorted orcs when I went down too many levels too fast (Omens of Doom on level 15) I went up three whole levels killing them all. It was glorious and daring and nailbiting. I emptied three wands and drank over 10 cure light wound potions.
Why can't I blind a pesky mage or joy, of joys a hound? Well maybe not hounds they can smell after all. But I hope you see my point.
Arms should be equal. Stealing rogues and a blind spell is not much to askComment

you can ONLY identify weapons and armor.
We now use a rune system where each modifier is its own rune. For example, slay orcs is a rune. resist dark is a rune. speed is a rune.
this way, once you have identified, yes wait, i know you are fuming now, but hear me out.
Once you have identified a rune ONCE, you ALWAYS recognize that rune. So once you recognize boots [OF SPEED]. you will recognize ALL boots which have [OF SPEED].
If you already know the runes [OF SPEED] and [OF STEALTH], for example, and you find your first Boots Of Elvenkind, you will not need to Identify them, you will immediately know what they are.
The big difference is that once you identify every rune once, you can just throw away the Identify scrolls. No longer do you have to find "yet another weapon of Gondolin", because any of those you look at, you immediately recognize.
For everything else, well, use it and see."i can take this dracolich"Comment
