The big thing to be aware of with ttyrec is that it is specifically for recording stuff that happens in terminals ("tty" is for some reason a shorthand for "terminal"). Terminals are what Windows' old "cmd" shell is a crude imitation of. ttyrec doesn't generate video files, either -- it records the characters that the terminal displays. A compact, lossless "video format", but not exactly one you can share on YouTube.
There are significant advantages in using terminals, the big one being that you can (potentially) play the game on a server via SSH or similar and let other players spectate on your games.Comment

I know I'm about 5 days late to reply but....
I don't really know if this laptop has the ability to record (my wifes and its not very nice) but in a week or two I am moving and I can get my laptop and record it in 1080 (or higher? have 4k res on the piece but I don't know what the max recording resolution is with the recorder) with shadow play. So you can get all those bits and watch me bang my head into a wall in ultra high resolution. 1Tb disk hard drive and 1Tb SSD should be enough, but idk, Angband is pretty demanding.
I really like the idea of speed runs on the older versions. Seems that the most recent updates (recent being within prospective considering the last v I played before the current vanilla was 1.7 something) were to streamline the ui and make less user input to complete player turns/moves. Without that a speed run really relies on the player optimizing their turn and memorizing their inventory positions.
BTW whoever was responsible for the auto * after using keys like i, e, z, a (ect) is my hero.Last edited by chknflyrice; March 19, 2017, 06:03.Comment

Completely irrelevant, because ttyrec doesn't record video, it records which letters/symbols are displayed at which time. You can then transplant the recording to a different terminal with a different font size (or different font altogether).Comment

I gave this a try but died from hummerhorns on DL17.
Tried again, and my recording stopped without my knowing before Bolder dropped me, on DL24, the ring of Dilion:
<+11> speed <+5> CON (+1, +6) activates to restore mana.
rAcid, rLightn, rFire, rNexus, rNether, hLife, SI, Aggravates
I could not contain my incredulity. That is an insane item to find at any depth. And it's the first time I've found an aggravating item and been happy to wear it. It's very rare the power of an item is worth the aggravation.
I also found boots of speed <+4> on the floor of DL14. Feeling? 4...... 4. (four). 4. Then, right after entering DL43 I find boots of speed <+10> hanging out on the floor, and a short distance below me is a small vault. But the best item on the level, the boots, was within easy reach. So at DL43 I already have all the speed I'm going to need to win the game. I'm about 3 hours already into my game. I think maybe a better idea is instead of trying to beat the game in three hours, people who are interested should just see how quickly they can beat it and then post their videos and time. I think 7 hours is about what I could do it in. Maybe 5 or 6 if things go really smoothly.Beginner's Guide to Angband 4.2.3 Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9c9e2wMngM

I'm playing H/T Warrior, my favorite class/combo.
I have a pretty bad internet connection so I never got around to uploading my games. A lot of my @s have died since. My current one, which is supposed to be a speed run, has been pretty interesting given that early ring of power <+11> <+5>. I don't normally find cursed artifacts, but this game I've found 3, and the latest is very interesting.
Basically, a million arrows please.
Well, here's the thing. I found a short bow <+3> <+2>. The bow has no stat boosts. The <+3> is shots and the <+2> is power. So it's an x4 with 3 shooting speed. But it's (+7, +5) (since finding it I've enchanted it to +10, +7). I also found boots of speed <+13> and now I'm up to +28 base speed. But now I find cursed boots that reduce my AC by a whopping 30 from my current boots as well as drain exp (but I do hLife). However, they have +2 shooting speed and immunity to fire. The curse makes me vulnerable to cold. If I could remove the curse, the boots might be worth wearing, except I lose 13 speed doing so. I could swap a ring of damage for a ring of speed though. If I were to wear the boots I'd have +5 shooting speed. With +3 shooting speed the low enchantment bow was doing 800 to evil with seeker arrows of evil. I could go full on ranged combat and wear a dagger of <+5> speed.
However, my current setup I'm doing 701 to non-rFire with one weapon and 534 vs evil/550 vs acid with a swap. The non-rFire weapon only has +7 to-dam.
So basically Angband has presented me with a rather intriguing crossroads. Do I choose primary melee and ?*Enchant* the melee weapon or do I go primary ranger and ?*Enchant* the bow? I have decent AC at 181 in my current melee setup with very good ranged combat. Maybe I should keep both and have very good melee and very good ranged (warriors do both well, tho their melee is better than their ranged) vs having Insane ranged and okay melee. But I've never had +5 shooting speed, even as a ranger (to think I could have +7 shooting speed right now ). And I just wonder; everyone says shooting speed is overpowered, but I'd have to carry 4 stacks of arrows.
I'm also wondering about aggravation at this point. It's pretty annoying, but manageable.
Lately I'm enjoying Angband too much to speed through it, though. However, I would like to see a competition for winning the game in least number of turns. Currently my best is 33,002 turns, and I am not aware of anyone who has done it quicker in Vanilla. If there is a ladder post or char dump in the neighborhood of this number of turns or faster, I'd love to see it. Here is mine on the ladder. Anyway, below is my current adventurer:
