winning within 24h is not hard

honestly my first win (of 2) was in a 24h period

i dont think processor speed matters much for this game above pentium 2, to be totally honest, and this is 2017

set the delay to zero ofcourse and thats fast

but honestly fast is fun, theres no pressure if u dont want to

      Wobbly--
You're missing Eddie's point. V3.0 is significantly harder than V4.0.5, for a variety of reasons--most significantly, equipment power distribution. (Unfortunately it has some significant UI problems, though Eddie's version is much better on that front.)

For 3.0, it's ludicrous to think of a 3 hour win. That people are considering it now is (more) evidence that it's a different game.

A lightning game never holds the same standard for me, but is still a great game, just very different. I, was about to waffle on a bit explaining, but... the real difference between speed running a game & playing carefully? Play & see. Different standards. Different game. Both fun. Don't be an elitist about this.

You're missing his point. Chess is a game that requires orders of magnitudes more thinking time per move than Angband, yet it has fast play that forces sub-optimal play. Angband, regardless of the difficulty, could be speed run in the same way, with sub-optimal choices.

If chess grandmasters can lower themselves to play a sub-optimal game, then there's no reason that an Angband player should have a stick up their arse about speed runs.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is also a hard roguelike, but real time speedruns by the best players fall in the 1-2 hour range, whereas I can't win any faster than 8 hours. That doesn't make DCSS a bad/easy/no skill game, it just means that people who are REALLY good at a game can quickly decide on decisions they've made 1000s of times in the past, and figure out what calculated risks speed up the run while not adding intractable amounts of risk.

As woobly says, the fact that a game can be played fast doesn't mean it requires no skill - it just requires a different kind of skill now.

Any game, no matter how challenging, can be speedrun; with the possible exception of Journey to Alpha Centauri (In Real Time). And any game, no matter how challenging, can be speedrun in a ludicrous time.

But not everybody has the temperament to be a speedrunner - and not everybody is good enough to be a speedrunner. That part rules me out

The 3-hour guess is just that -- a guess. In a game as RNG-heavy as Angband, it's hard to know just how fast a game could be played if everything went really smoothly. We're talking playing a "fast" character type (like half-troll warrior or rogue or something similar), having the RNG bless you with great gear early on, diving deep into the dungeon, and not getting slaughtered by the many high-level enemies despite charging around like a maniac while you build your gear, stats, and levels high enough to take on Sauron and Morgoth. How long would that take? Well, you'd probably be spending literally thousands of hours trying to get that one perfect run...

Such a gameplay style is theoretically able to work in 3.0 just as quickly. It's probably less likely because of the changes in item/monster distributions, but the underlying concept is still sound (or as sound as any concept that involves throwing hundreds or thousands of characters into the meatgrinder is, anyway). In any case I don't think such things are really all that informative about how difficult the game is for traditional playstyles.

You can do whatever you want, as long as you document it; if you use autoscum, then your speed run counts in the cathegory with autoscum (and does not compete with someone elses run who doesnt use autoscum).

But I hardly consider that fair considering I believe it is not under the cheat options menu

If you're going to speed run Vanilla 3.0.x, use OBS Studio to record it, at 1920x1080 if possible

If you want to record games of angband, you should use ttyrec. It is rad.

As far as speedrunning goes, I think 3 hours is pretty achievable, though I've never tried to do a fast-in-realtime run...

You just start it and run whatever unix terminal stuff you want and it records the byte stream that goes to your terminal to a file. You can even stream that file on the intertron using the termcast service and a utility called ttrtail. People already do this with sil and poschengband.
