    New member, old angbander

Hello everyone. Was a long time DCSS player but I decided to give it a long break and switch to Angband (whenever I feel like roguelike itching).

So, I'm so-called angband veteran back from the 90's. Won this game once without savescumming. Now rolled everyone's basic Half-Troll Warrior and got to Dungeon level 29. Going strong with the char, but as a newfound rookie, I'd want to ask if level 30 is still the point, where stat potions start to appear more or less frequently.

Another thing is teleport other wand. How deep am I supposed to dive to find one? I know I'm gonna need one even if I have most of the resistances covered.

I'm on my first game after downloading 4.0.5 and winning it outright would obviously feel good. Probably not going to happen but at least I got a good start with the easiest combo possible (still???).

Welcome. There seems to be a great wave of fresh blood incoming.

Stat potions appear more frequently the deeper you search. It is generally not recommended to stop descending and farm them, as that process would take long and thus be more risky than searching in more dangerous, but overproportionally more rewarding depths. If the objective is to win with this character at all costs, then staying at comfortable depths might be the best, if boring, option.

Teleport other is less frequent than it used to be. Also note that it only affects one target, not everything in its path like it used to. If you are desperate, checking the black market frequently is a good way to get it (and other important things); some shops now get better items as your max depth increases. This is another reason to dive fast; even if you dont find a hat of telepathy in the dungeon, chances are higher to see it in the shop when your recall is deep.

Yes they are still native to depth 30, but as Estie says, Eddie Grove's philosophy pretty much won the day on strategy. In any case, it is not clear that HT Warrior is the easiest class. HE/Kobold Rogue is also in the running.

        Thanks dudes.

Just another question: Thengel or Regeneration Cap? I know my regen is already pretty fast but does Confusion resistance override regen around these levels? I have tons of curing potions.

Also you guys can help me to teach posting the dump (ladder called here i assume). I know it helps experts to give better tips. If someone's wondering, I'm not a computer oriented man. I just play roguelikes on my free time.

Regen is binary; further sources dont benefit a half troll.

          For making a dump: "C"haracter, then "f"ile.

As for "easiest": my favourite in that regard is half troll rogue; while stealth + object detection kick in later, it is in time to avoid the huge rise in difficulty for warriors around level 30.

Use "f" on the character info page. The dump will be located in lib/Users in your angband directory. File it here from the Ladder tab, bottom of the page

Nothing but nothing has a stronger start to the game than the half-troll warrior. When you're struggling to make it to dlvl10, the ol' HT/W is a great pick. They plateau earlier than some other race/class combos, sure, but they're still very strong overall and are a ton of fun to play.

And I'll continue to categorically deny that High-Elf is a good pick for anyone for anything.

Would you still say that if experience penalties were removed?

                  @Derakon--
Early SI lets you dive very fast with terrible gear, and the bonus in stats lets you reach a powerful level very quickly. The bonuses to shooting, devices, etc pretty much cancels slow level gain except for spell fail rate. Yeah it's painful for a few levels at the end playing mage, but no other class needs to worry about levels beyond the low 40s anyway. I assure you HE Rogue is ideal for powerdives.

Pretty rookie question but, as a warrior can you not cast any spells at all?

How do you detect? Only wands/staves/rods? Or do you just hope for an early ESP hat?

Yep, warriors never get spells. So it's staff of detect evil for monster detection, and scrolls for the other detects, until you upgrade to the rods. But a warrior is tough enough to tank one hit from anything short of a ridiculously ood monster, so you can run around without detection through the early- and mid-game if you have to.

Oh, and considering that you're just getting back into the game, you might try downloading 3.5.1 rather than any of the 4.0 versions. 4.0 isn't much different in gameplay compared to 3.5.1, but the underlying code has been heavily redesigned, and it's still rather buggy. 3.5.1 is a lot more stable.

No, I wouldn't, and I fully support such a change, assuming that we recalibrate experience so that a "standard" character still levels up at the same rate. I don't think that having mages level up slower than warriors adds anything really meaningful to the game, and I certainly don't think that grotesque penalties on the Dunadain and High-Elf races are reasonable. Let some races be just flat-out better than others; I don't care as long as they're all fun to play.

Plus you know newbies are going to beeline the High-Elf anyway; might as well not punish them for it.

I assume this char is basically won already. But few questions I still have.

                            1) I just yesterday discovered that there is an in-game "lose artifacts" option when leaving level. So unless i have not picked up an artifact, I should not care less reading tele level or stumbling on a trap door unless I pick up the thing?

                            2) Resist disenchantment covers all my equipment if I just have the resist on?

                            3) How does Angband AC work in general? I obviously notice an increase of incoming damage when using Doomcaller even if I use it on single fights coz or -50 AC and aggravation (not that I care that much because of its insane damage in certain fights).

EDIT: 4) Is that Ring of Speed (+9) an overkill with 36 speed? I'm thinking some good Ring of Damage might be better at this point but I may be horribly wrong.

                            5) How fucking stupid was I dropping Evenstar thinking briefly that it takes an amulet slot so I won't need it anymore..?

And please forgive me for my turncount. I'm still experimenting the new stuff and the spoiler files seem to be vanished so I don't know what to expect. Also I've been digging A LOT! Nevertheless, I've had tons of fun after years of DCSS

Yes, you can swap out 10 or more speed for a ring of damage.
