Should melee be more likely to wake nearby monsters?

I think melee, shooting or offensive spellcasting should have a higher chance of waking sleeping monsters. Currently a character with good stealth can hack or shoot at a monster and nearby monsters will generally stay asleep.

This doesn't seem realistic (I guess Angband isn't supposed to be realistic, but you know what I mean). My gnome mage can often take groups on one-at-a-time in a room like this. It seems that melee is no more likely to wake a sleeping monster than just walking past.

Perhaps any offensive action in a room could have the same chance to wake monsters that lighting the room up does. Does anyone else think that would be an improvement?

In Minimal, monsters within LOS are likely to wake up if the @ takes damage.

If that effect is significant, it would just encourage luring monsters one by one and make the gameplay even more keypress intensive than it already is.

That was my thinking...and the response to that would end up being "why doesn't the one orc that's awake wake all his buddies up before he goes chasing that sound he heard?"

At some point, you have to sacrifice realism for fun gameplay. Personally I think that being able to off a group of enemies one at a time is a nice perk for a high-stealth character, and isn't unbalancing.

Sil works this way. Pack sizes aren't quite so big, but it's hard to deal with as a stealth guy (you want to know you're going to oneshot something if you stab it near its buddies.) On the other hand, stealth kind of sucks in Sil compared to everything else, especially if you're wanting to kill things.
