I have not played much vanilla, but in z and s, con is a very high priority? My dwarf s char is roughly equiv to lv 37 v (at dlv65), and well - he's warrior oath but has over 800 hp. Subtract the extra "warrior" dice, still would be 700+. His con is like 18/250 lol. Overkill. But ht gets +4 con already? So 18/30 out the gate?

12 hit dice plus 6 for pally? Avg 9 per lv * 35 = 305 + con bonus - yeah guess that does make sense. My char has had 18/100 or more con since the upper 20s dlv, but I'm also not a fast diver. And s is a lot different than v.

      Edit to add:
My current half-orc paladin has 374 HP at level 36. But he has only 18 constitution (and is only at dungeon level 57).
Wow - how do you survive high end breath attacks as a melee char with hp that low?

Actually I just added up his con bonuses - its 18/320 lol. Thats not a typo lol. Its how his equipment is to cover resists, plus hammerhand/tulkas, and his +15 sv gloves have +5 con.

I don't know about SAngband, but in most variants the max score for any stat is 18/220 (the point where it displays as 18/***), and the max effective score for CON is 18/200, since you don't get any more HP above that point.

I mean, you may be getting all those CON bonuses because the gear they're on has other abilities you also need (EDIT: yes, that's what you just said, d'oh). I'm just saying there's no point in stacking CON that high.

Sangband is the same. Although there is a benefit up to 18/220 (18/***). Im actually annoyed everything has so many con bonuses! I just recently got dex maxed, that took a lot of effort. So much warrior gear is str/con and no dex.

Just lost another char to a dragon breath, very similar situation Char was a another HT paladin, level 37, dungeon level 79. Had a base speed of +26 and a rand-art weapon that did 450 damage per turn to dragons. Wanted to take out a room full of red dragons, lead by a Hell Wyrm plus 4 Dracolisks, plus ancient and lower red dragons all at most quick. I can double resist fire and I thought Dracolisk= half dragon half basilisk means breathes fire and poison. The Hell Wyrm was already dead but then I learned Dracolisks breath nexus, which I didn't resist. 400 damage means I had -35

It's OK, Greater Basilisks can breathe nexus.
