Absolutely positive. It's quite observable. E.g., fire missiles at a monster north of the @ and get the message about something rolling under foot. Look, and nothing is there (and it didn't just automatically go back into inventory, either). Another example, kill a monster north of @ and get the message about something rolling underfoot. See an object appear in an adjacent square, but nothing is under @.
