    Often my early rangers will be using slings or crossbows, and sometimes even after the 1st extra shot at level 20 if the bows found are still not outperforming, but pretty quickly it's bows only and two or three inventory slots full of arrows. Make pincushions of them!

      Cheers, don't worry I didn't chuck my arrow collection away. The bow I did but the arrows are home

      He's doing much better generally now - down at a good depth for stat pump potions - a bit more strength, a bit more dex and he's away. Got a better melee weapon now too (although that greathammer with ESP is still wielded most of the time)

        I don't see a useful summary of the damage output per time unit or similar. Am I misreading it?

          every identified weapon and, if you are wielding a launcher, missile for the launcher will show "damage per round" information when you inspect it. The damage per round is the average damage for the sum of all the @'s blows in a single round of combat. Remember, for missiles, you must be wielding a launcher of the appropriate type for the missile to see damage information on the missile.

            Does vanilla not have the (x/y) notation on the end of ammo? Looking at my poscheng character the bolts are:

            22 bolts (1d5) (+9, +5) (114/95)

            where 114 is the damage/shot
            95 is the damage/round (I've got less then 1 shot/round)

            Much more convenient then having to use the inspect command. If it doesn't, I'd like to suggest adopting it.

                I know that feeling of excitement. My Cl 34 Half-Elf Ranger just stumbled on Belthronding in a vault on Dl 41. Woohoo! The only better bow would be an extremely lucky jumped up Lothlorien bow. Belthronding will probably be this @'s bow all the way to the finish, assuming he gets that far.

                    I WON!



                    That was 3rd attempt with Dwarf Warrior. I am getting better at angband!!
                    I LOVE warriors. I can progress incredibly quickly with that class.
                    DL40 in 2 hours,
                    DL60 in 2 days,
                    then another 2 days to creep on tiptoes to DL99.

                    For Morgoth battle I didn't have enough healing, but he didn't manastorm alot. He did summon a lot, and for that an empty Staff of *Destruction* + Scroll of Recharging worked perfectly.

                    Few.. Relief. Whatever you say about road being more important than destination... Winning is the ultimate goal, and I've DONE it!

                    The next is Priest.
                    Question: Should I inflate all points to WIS or leave them as default????

                      I prefer WIS, then STR. Might sacrifice point or two from STR to DEX if that affects your hitting probability.

                        Yeah, WIS. Anything you can do to get that up high. There are a few ways to play priest since they are so versatile and can take a beating, but high WIS will always make your life much easier, especially once you get the almighty OOD.

I start with the Point-Based suggested stats, then try and make the most important stat for the class be about 18/10 or 18/20. If it exceeds that, I take points and throw them into Str, Dex, or Con, (usually Con), to level out the unmodified stats. I then rely on skill and stealth to get me to stat-gain depth. I tend to save up stat-swap potions, using them only when the important stats are all over 18, thereby limiting the downside. In the end, I think, because the important stats are more level, I get the stats to maximum more quickly, apart from one trash stat (either Int or Wis, depending on the class), which usually takes forever to maximize.

                              For pure casters (Mages and Priests) maxing your key stat is important since it gets you more mana and lower failure rates. For priest, the difference between say 27 and 28 mana points is an extra OoD which can be the difference between killing Mugash (for example) and just wounding him.

                                True, but you're not required to kill Mugash at any particular point in time -- in fact, you're probably always better off just avoiding uniques for the most part until the mid or late game.

                                However, in the early game a difference of 1 HP can mean the difference between life and death if you have to run away from a monster that (randomly) has a +1 speed advantage over you... and there's no coming back from death. If you have to run away, it's really just your pride that's hurt . Of course you should always have !CCW (and such), but early game they may not be as easily available. Incidentally, there are also examples of late game characters that have died with -1 HP on the ladder. Too lazy to actually try to find them, but I'm pretty sure I've seen at least two or three.
