Yeah I know how to handle summons to some extent, they happen in Nethack too - Master Lich summons 10 major demons and another Master Lich which then summons another 10 major demons etc and you're in schtuck. In Nethack you can't just run away either as that level will always remain like that - they don't disappear every time you go up and down a staircase. That's why we genocide Master Lich's as a matter of course unless you fancy a proper hard time completing it.

Speed v Nexus - that's what I thought and then immediately got blasted by a surprise attack by a nexus vortex upon descending
Fortunately as a dwarf I seemed to resist it's effects through a saving roll.

I shall remain wary though - my stats are all 18/something except for intelligence which is still 12. A swap through a nexus attack might be significantly disadvantageous.

I do start to get why it's a bad move to attack everything. Losing half your stuff through fireball attacks by multiple foes worth 300 XP each is just attrition that's not helpful.

Mystics can stun, which is a great way to watch your character get pounded, helpless to do anything. Be careful with your status and use CCW to clear any effects. Pstun renders them mostly harmless, but they also summon hounds amongst others. Also be aware because Masters aren't the top of that particular tree.

You can make your dump read better on the forum by putting CODE tags around it (use the # button). Or you can post it to the ladder using the tab at the top.

Yeah that was the problem, I tried to teleport him away twice in a row it failed and ... yeah... playing too quickly, didn't pay attention to the stun and hence the failure rate of my rods of teleport other.

That's 3 times in a row I've died in possession of scroll of banishment

Cheers for the tip on forum coding - will edit.

[edit] I see you've done it for me - thanks!

              Got myself another good'un going

Half elf rogue now at DL52 CL 36 with nearly 400 HP - most resistances gained except (frustratingly) nether although not all at the same time. Dex is maxed (I guess - potions no longer increase beyond 18/200) and strength is near that. Nether missing has not been a problem so far, have survived several attacks so far but remain wary - took out a Dreadmaster still though.

Have definitely learned to gtfo from battles I can't win and to take care not to keep pressing buttons when a big HP drop happens. At this depth it starts to become deadly at nearly every try, am running a lot or using my teleport other wands judiciously. If it's worth 50,000 XP it's obviously too tough - especially when it's named Ar Pharazon the Golden or Saruman of many colours. Just doing a level with them two plus Uvatha the horseman - killed the latter and got a ring of speed +9 - with the armour Thakettolth I'm now +12 speed - could be +15 if I go home and retrieve Sting but I'm not fire or cold resistant then (I have spells for these but not enough Mana yet). The other two uniques are lurking - were asleep before I teleported them - but I'll leave them be - just search the vaults I found them in. +9 Speed ring was a big prize this level.

Seen so many artifacts I could have filled my home but most are clearly useless at this stage of the game - really need something with cold/fire resistance in my armour so I can use Sting again - that's a good weapon and has speeeeeed. Getting Thalkettolth ended that as I then ditched my armour of Elvenkind- but the Battleaxe of Balli Stonehand suffices currently.

Right, loving this game, 3 days old now - once again I've failed to stfu - I fully expect to die in moments now I've blabbed.

PS Is it me or should the small shield of Thorin not be wooden - he was Oakenshield FFS? (yes I'm a Tolkien nerd - sorry) I saw a thread elsewhere where someone was moaning about Sauron dropping Narya and someone pointed out that a certain scruffy hobbit should drop the One ring - it's OK though as I've had scruffy hobbits drop the Sling of Power - well saved

If your stat says *** it means with all the bonuses you are at 18/220. No additions of extra stat from potions or gear will make any difference.

If the stat says e.g. DEX:! (with the exclamation point ! following the stat), it means you have maxed your internal stat, and there's no point in drinking more potions for that stat. If you are below 18/220, you can still improve with gear, but not with potions.

Ah now then - just found the Scythe 'Avavir' with fire/frost resistance and +3 speed - happy days - +15 speed it is.

Thanks, I suspected as much, I've seen 18/*** in other posts. That's why I was cautious.

Well, his first shield broke at the battle of Azanulbizar, and he used a branch instead - I'm guessing after the battle his Dad bought him a shiny new one

                        Indeed

Well I survived the bragging moment. Down to lvl 57 now - skipped 56 as it had about 100,000 nether hounds in it. Without nether resistance, I think not.

It's a bit annoying having to skip out some battles. I tried taking Shelob on, until she incanted terribly and I was knocked down to 38 HP - bit risky as I'm out of teleport scrolls but teleport other saved me. Must find more teleport scrolls. I used to have teleport level scrolls but they seem to have mysteriously vanished... guess those 9 and 11 headed hydras are likely to blame - I certainly haven't read any.

                        Anyway, onwards and downwards... tomorrow...

Well this is now going very swimmingly, down to DL65 now and at +34 speed - insane! Still missing nether resistance but everything else is awesome - have taken down Ar Pharazon the Golden, Eol the dark elf (he was a pussy), Scatha the Worm, at least four of the Nazgul... - still don't fancy taking on a vault with multiple 11-headed Hydras though. 585 HP now.

If all the useful stuff is DL 75 or lower then it must be truly awesome. Hopefully I'll get to see this time.

Not really scared of much now, cracked it (to a point at least) this game

Ha ha. Yeah still a few monsters I have trouble with - Osse, Arien, Ungoliant, the Mouth of Sauron - the Jabberwock was indeed an interesting foe - I let it go.

Saruman is toast though as is the Balrog of Moria plus quite a lot of Great Wyrms of various kinds - nearing DL 80 now - couple of scrolls of deep descent seemed reasonable.

Currently liking the Great Axe of Eonwe (accents? meh ) and the heavy crossbow of Umbar is stored at home for endgame purposes - not liking its aggravation thing but I guess that won't matter later.

Have nether resist *at last* though speed is down to a mere 28 as a result. 760 HP now helps a lot.

This is surely an endgame character if I'm not stupid though, shame I have no idea what to do in the endgame - except kill the baddies obv

                              Having fun anyway

Another quirk I find amusing - I just found The Whip of Gothmog.

                                THE Whip of Gothmog.

Now since I've seen him, and I don't recall killing him - has he gone senile over the years and gone and put it down somewhere and forgotten it...?

Maybe I'll find his glasses lying around too...
