In defense of ToME:
It has an option to enable the so-called "tactical overlay" (or something like that). Each field with a living thing in it is surrounded with a border indicating friend/foe/ego/unique status via color. Maybe it's because I play in ASCII with background+overlay mode, but I've never had the trouble of being surprised by there being an ego monster.
Though being surprised by how it murders you is another matter entirely.
