While I'm generally against guaranteed instakill attacks by monsters, I think it might be interesting to have a low-HP monster (mana elemental?) that casts damaging spells with great frequency, maybe at high speed. A monster that would not be hard to kill, but would require killing within one or two turns once it appeared on the scene. That might make for some interesting situations.

I'm totally against moving, mana-breathing walls of death though.

You mean a monster that would never be worth fighting
Exactly. Why everything is to be killed ?

How about not moving ones, 10k HP mana breathing mold

Also maybe something really dangerous in melee, without any ranged attacks, probably slow, like moloch in ADOM.

Current Angband miss tactical combat, maybe worth adding.

        ???

Angband has plenty of tactical combat. But there's a huge difference between a monster that can literally one-shot any character in the game and, say, the Tarrasque. The latter is theoretically killable, even if most characters won't want to. The former is not, at least not realistically.

"Tactical combat" does not require instant death monsters, and frankly I think that adding more monsters that are more dangerous than Morgoth is not a good idea.

Angband has plenty of tactical combat.
Well, yes, but it is magical, or cheesy in Vanilla, FA have much more of it, e.g. staying in rubble while fighting gives advantage, etc. Sil or e.g. ADOM have once again way more tactical stuff.

As a whole if you count all tricks and abilities Angband is very tactical, but I would like to see normal non-magical non-cheesing combat more interesting.

And instant kill stuff is unrelated, however may be fun by itself.

I read this and thought "Time Hounds". Not exactly, but close enough. Maybe "Time Pups", the undeniably cute and cuddly offspring of Maggot's vicious dogs and a severely OoD time bitch. Killer.

basilisk is a gotha monster from late dl20s. At least he gets me a lot. I usually have rPoison by the time greater basilisk comes around, so he's usually not much of a problem.

I remember the first time Kavlax killed me. He's a 'd' that should probably be a really big 'D'.

How about a backward 'K' (not pictured). A unique character for a unique character killer. That would get their attention.

In recent versions, Kavlax is black though, which gives him a unique sprite. Remember in the old days when he looked like any baby MHD...

When I find monsters with the following texts in their description:
                        "It may breath poison (800)"

Are the numbers the damage it can do? This is without taking into account resistances, right? Anyway, not taking any chances with this one. It is a Great Swamp Wyrm if you are curious.

Yes, that's the maximum damage for one breath. Elemental damage may be reduced by resistances. Also, a monster can only breath full damage if it is at full health.

First off, I hope it is ok to just post here my questions instead of flooding the forum with them.

Ok, so I spent my afternoon playing angband and I got from DL 60 to DL72. I need some advice. I think I am very tough but my firepower is very low. My OoD does not kill summoning monsters quick enough to end the battle before they have the chance to do so.

So first off, can disenchantment cripple my gear beyond repair? I didn't noticed that my weapon was getting weaker and now it is so weak that I can, at most, raise it do (+9, +9). Do *enchant weapon* scrolls push beyond these limits?

Is it a good idea to return to DL60 and hope to get vaults to upgrade my gear?

What are some good strategies to deal with summoners?

You'll find better gear eventually. After you do, avoid disenchantment, try to get resistance.

Nah, just go to dlvl 98 and find the stuff on the ground, kill stuff that is weak, find stuff they drop.

                              Summoners are not worth fighting.

Enchant scrolls can push up to about +15, +15 but once you get to +9, +9 the odds of a successfully enchantment become very low. Probably better to just look for a new weapon...

I would not recommend going back up. The deeper you are, the better the gear.

For summoners, you can create an anti-summoning corridor. This is basically a zig-zagging corridor so the summoner can only see a limit number of spots. Go to a wall and create a tunnel on a diagonal to one direction then go in the other diagonal with the next dig. Keep alternating. You can also lay down a few runes of protection so every time the monster breaks one you just step back to the next one.
