    Seeking advice for a warrior!

    Hello all! I am a very new player of Angband. I've had around 3 previous games so far, and this is the most promising yet (my first death was due to a mature black dragon in a vault at ~CL 23). As you can see, I am playing a veerrrry slow game and I tend to repeatedly linger at a certain depth so as to grind levels and get more artifacts.

    This game was a pretty lucky one; the =Speed <+10> was a very early item drop for me, which made most of the early unique monsters a walk in the park. I've also been clearing out a bunch of vaults as I've progressed; the most dangerous encounters were probably with Ancalagon at ~45 and Kronos around the same level. Thank god for Rods of TO.

    Anyway, I'm having a bit of trouble with several mid-game monsters: hounds (especially Plasma, Time, Gravity), powerful summoning spellcasters (had a lot of trouble with an arch-lich that summoned a bunch of powerful undead next to me; had to rush to the stairs rather than get killed), and of course undead pits. I know that undead pits are among the most dangerous parts of the dungeon, and I try to actively avoid them (last time I walked next to one druj spells nearly killed my character).

    So is there any advice that you people can offer me? Any artifacts (in my house) that I should be using instead of my current inventory? I am in need of a reliable source of banishment (Eonwe recharges too slowly) and resists to stunning and confusion.

    Ignore my burdened level; my character had just cleared out a vault (killed Ungoliant and Uriel ) and I am reorganising my inventory.

    You need ESP real bad. The situations you've outlined above are always going to be deadly to a melee character, so the best solution is avoidance. And, the best way to avoid them is with ESP. I didn't look over your equipment list, but if you can figure out a swap that gives you ESP, it's worth forgoing several of the higher-level resists (e.g. anything not rFire/Cold/Elec/Acid/Poison) to get it.

    Other comments:

    If you killed Uriel, you're doing alright in general. I'm actually surprised that you got so far w/out ESP Nice work.

    I haven't played a Warrior to that depth before, but one thing I'd advise is swapping out a speed ring for a really good damage ring... if you ever really need to go above 30 speed, use a consumable / rod if you have one.

    Finding a way to get +1 Dex and then adding the damage ring might make Anguirel a very interesting option

      Also, you have an insane stack of *Healing* - I'd carry at least one with you at all times. You've already got immunity to cold, so you're not going to lose any to spells.

      Not sure if you've found any *Destruction* or Banishment/Mass Banishment scrolls, but those are also great escapes you'll want to have a few of in inventory at all times.

        Thanks a lot for the help.

        However, why would I wield Anguirel? Though its damage to "other" monsters is higher than that of Eonwe, aren't most of the monsters at my level evil and affected by the slays of Eonwe? Also, I am forced to rely on Eonwe for reliable (if incredibly slowly recharging) banishment, which I use to clear undead pits/vaults etc.

        I can't seem to find *banishment*/banishment staves and the scrolls I find are often quickly used up. Also, I'm scared of aggravate monster. Last time I tried out Anguirel I found that I took much more damage than usual. Maybe it doesn't suit my playstyle...?

          It sounds like you're trying to clear everything on each level. This isn't going to work too well. Think of undead pits and the nastier vaults as being obstacles to be avoided or worked around, not challenges to your warrior's prowess. Eonwe's activation is handy, but you shouldn't feel like you need it -- you're lucky to have a replenishable source of banishment at all, frankly.

          Particularly, you want to be saving scrolls of Mass Banishment and Destruction for the final fights, because they're vital for handling Morgoth's summons and constraining line of sight. Though it's also a good idea to carry Destruction with you during normal exploration, because it's an excellent last-ditch escape if you get in over your head.

          Ignoring undead pits, what are you finding yourself having to use Eonwe's activation for?

          Your body armor is entirely redundant (I'd be very surprised if its breath weapon activation does more damage than your bow at this point). Equip Rohirrim instead; it'll give you protection from confusion -- always helpful.

          You have too much speed. Ditch a speed ring for a Ring of Damage (ideally you'd have kept your best damage ring in your home, but oh well). A +15 damage ring (best you can find) would increase your damage by about 20%. Swapping to Anguirel would put you up only 2 damage/round (or 5 if you swapped in Rohirrim for the DEX, maxing your blows/round), so that's not especially compelling, especially since you'd be losing Eonwe's superior undead and demon slays. You should be stockpiling potions of Speed in your home (for the final fights), and carrying a staff of Speed for big fights in the dungeon; that will make up for the speed loss.

            Thanks for your advice. I just found a staff of Banishment I normally use Eonwe in vaults (I'm clearing vaults because I'm looking for Ringil) and undead pits should they have a good enough level feeling, though I normally stay away from those (especially now that Black Reavers are starting to appear).

            Thanks for the armour tip -- I had just switched from a disenchantment resist Full Plate Armor of Elvenkind (just got the disenchantment resist cloak) and I didn't really know what armour to wear.

            Also, beat Glaurung The mass banishment from Eonwe helped me get rid of his summoned Great Wyrms, though it was a really difficult fight (used up a bunch of Healing potions). I also nearly died from a MHD pit. Any tips on how to deal with those?

            Edit: Also have a =damage +12. I've got around 28 speed right now, which is probably because I am permanently burdened. Any tips on how I can clear my inventory to reduce my burdened level?

                Hello again. I've taken your advice and progressed further into the dungeon. I also have rConf, which now makes Titans fairly trivial monsters, and I avoid undead pits whenever I see them. Demon and Dragon pits have also started appearing; I avoid demon pits (Pit Fiends are tough) and I've only cleared out a White Dragon pit (immunity is nice, but Dracoliches, which I find are rather out of place are tough) once. I've also gotten several more staves of Banishment and *Destruction* from vaults etc, and these have saved my life more than once. Banishing annoying Zephyr hounds is always a nice thing

                Problems I'm facing right now:
                • I lack ESP, which according to the advice I've gotten, is very helpful in helping me avoid Zephyr Hounds better. Right now, if I fail to detect them, I probably take one breath attack (Time!) and have to use the staff of TP to get away.
                • Also, very VERY low on !Healing; though I have a bunch of !*Healing*, I hear that those are for the final battle with Morgoth; should I still use those?
                • I also am permanently burdened; is there anything that I can sell/drop from my character and home inventories? I'm rather unwilling to sell armours currently because the armour shopkeeper is a little douchebag half-orc who refuses to give anything more than 5000 gold, but I suppose I don't really need much cash now...
                • Lacking Nether resist, which means I run from Nether hounds etc. Is rNether *that* important that I must have it?
                • Lacking stun resist. This is one of my biggest problems, and I have to chug !CCW against Master Mystics and Plasma hounds. I have the Crown of Numenor, but I'll lose a valuable sustain for Str (which is why I have no trouble with Dreads), Con and Dex. If I switch to shield of Anarion from Thorin to get the sustains, I lose acid immunity.

                  If you don't lose too much bpr by using Numenor, put it on. Resist blindness and stunning is vital at your depth, way more than sustains.

                    Money is pretty useless at your depth. I stopped selling things after I reached max stats (until then, buying the occasional stat-up potion at the black market sped things up a tad). Drop the stuff you don't need -- being burdened is just plain dumb if you can avoid it

                    Nether resist is really just a nice-to-have -- I think it's one of those resists that is quite variable, so in the worst case it doesn't even help that much. Don't worry about it.

                      Also, with situations like what you describe in your last bullet point (if I equip this, one monster becomes easier but another becomes harder) -- it's fine to carry swap-equipment in your inventory, if you can handle the burden. That way, if you see a Dread coming, you can quickly throw on some equipment that sustains strength. (I often keep a weaponmastery amulet in my inventory for precisely this reason.)

                      But there are some resist/buff combinations that are just generally useful, and you'll want to have those on your "main" kit.

                      ESP makes swap equipment even more effective, because you can see threats coming and adjust to them in advance.

                        Congratz on youre warrior. :+) loking good. As far as the hounds go i would preferably banish them, destruct them or just leave the level. They can end youre game really, really quickly. I try not to fight Master Mystics either, just not worth the risk. Undead pits arent too bad as long as you banish the eye druj first, and cover your resists. Just set it up so youre in a defensive position (anti summoning tunnel, vault, corner, or dead end) and let them come to you. Nether resist, is nice to have when youre fighting the Angel of Death, and a few others, i usually keep a swap for that one. Good luck, and have fun.

                          After a quick look at your inventory, unless I'm missing something I'm not seeing any scrolls of Teleport Level in either of your dump files. Are you using them? Have you run out of stock?

                          I always, always, always carry ?TL no matter which class I'm playing. If I so much as see a Time Hound then I read one and leave the level immediately. Even if I'm a spellcaster that has the spell itself in a book, I may find myself out of mana at precisely the wrong time.

                          No matter how good the level feeling is, if I see Time Hounds it's just not worth hanging around.

                          Sure, you could banish the Time Hounds. But scrolls of TL are a helluva lot more common (you can often find them at the Black Market in town) than sources of banishment, which I tend to save for the endgame.

                          Remember that ?TL always gives you the first move when you arrive at the new level, whereas teleporting away might simply land you in another sticky situation elsewhere on the same level, resulting in a painful instadeath.

                          Also, as far as cash goes, I highly recommend playing with the "birth_no_selling" option with your future characters. It sounds counter-intuitive I know, but every gold drop and buried treasure is increased (quite massively) in value to compensate for the fact that you can't sell things.

                          Personally, I got really sick of recalling back to town every five minutes to sell some crappy dagger or some other item whose sale value barely covers the cost of the Recall scrolls needed to sell it. That gets really tedious, especially when you only have the inventory slots to pick up 2-3 items at a time.

                          Nowadays (playing with "birth_no_selling"), whenever I start a new character I buy a shovel, one scroll of Word of Recall, and a few scrolls of Treasure Detection and then dive to around 500'. Dig a few "*"s out of the walls at that depth, and I find that when I read my one scroll of Recall I have enough gold to buy something useful like a staff of Teleportation.

                          The best part is that you're diving beyond the early levels where Smeagol and Wormtongue keep showing up and stealing your hard-won gold when you're not nearly powerful enough to defeat them.

                            Hi all!

                            Thanks for the help (especially with ESP); my character has come a long way. I recently defeated Gothmog (in a vault) and Vecna (also in a vault); Tarrasque, however, is still alive. With them gone, I believe that most of the nasty summoning/escorted uniques are gone. However, I'm not quite sure about my ability to beat Sauron and Morgoth, and I am having trouble with those summoning monsters (it was by good luck that I found both of Gothmog and Vecna in enclosed areas, allowing me to pick them off without them being able to summon around me).

                            Firstly, I've heard of this tactic called a 'summoning corridor', which is used to prevent monsters from being summoned around you IIRC. How would I go about digging such a corridor out when fighting a powerful summoner? Do I dig the corridor out while fighting the monster or do I dig it out beforehand?

                            Also, I have both Amras and Cubragol now. I know that Cubragol has that awesome +10 speed and Fire Branding of bolts, but do I need that extra speed? Also, I haven't been accumulating many Slay Evil/Holy Might bolts, so should I still go with Amras or should I forgo the superior damage of Amras for the +10 speed of Cubragol? Note that Amras is not my optimal bow; I'm looking for Belthronding, but I haven't been having much luck with that.

                            I've got both Narya and Nenya. I need Narya for its fire immune (which makes Balrogs/Hell Wyrms trivial), but I also wear Nenya for its combat bonuses (though they are small) and for the extra stats. I assume that I should keep wearing both Rings of Power and forgo that sweet ring of Speed <+17> that I found right?

                              Your melee is awesome, so I would just use Cubragol and keep both rings of power equipped for the immunities. Your speed will be a bit over the top (38?) but it will mean that you won't have to worry about carrying around sources of temp speed. More experienced folks here will probably have different opinions on this

                              Even as a rogue, I barely used projectiles in the endgame, mostly because I hated messing with the keystrokes/macros You could always fill half your quiver with bolts and the other half with arrows, and use Amras as a swap.

                              The anti-summoning corridor is generally dug out before you fight a unique, and then you draw the unique towards you. (I even do this when I open up the door to a monster pit -- I haaaaate being surrounded.)

                              Just alternate digging diagonals, and then crawl all the way to the back. Slash away The only things that cause problems are monsters that pass through walls, or burrow through walls, but even then the corridor helps a bit.

                              If you dig one of these vs Sauron and you have enough healing, I imagine that you'll roflstomp him. He's not that much harder than Vecna.

                              Morgoth is a different story -- I probably would not want him to summon the Tarrasque in mid-fight!
