Given that you live just west of the international date line, there are probably times where you have done that.

Good question, which doesn't have a clear answer. Basically v4 exists so everyone can code fun things. Vanilla exists so there can always be a reasonably balanced, non-buggy, playable game. Many of us have contributed code to both by this point.

I've volunteered to be release manage for 3.4, and hopefully I'm actually capable of this. I'm sure that in getting 3.4 out the door, everyone on the dev-team will contribute some. As for what will happen for 3.5, no one knows yet. the v4 combat system is probably too buggy to make it into 3.5, the balancing process is as hard as we expected. On the other hand, something like trap changes are a very good candidate.

But in fact in the last few months there have really only been three significant advances in the code (he says, hoping he hasn't forgotten anything and offended anyone):

          - Derakon's new combat system (v4)
          - CunningGabe's new trap system (v4)
          - Blubaron's improved mouse support and UI fixes (V, ported to v4 by me)

Wow - I think it's way too early to start talking about what might or might not make it into 3.5! But it is true that now we have a RM for 3.4 (thanks fizzix!) there is likely to be a lot more dev activity on V until it's out - but focused on bugfixing and small improvements rather than major changes. After that it might die down again, or people might feel they want to do some more radical stuff.

I gotta say, I read this entire thread just waiting for a post from dos350 about how the game was being ruined...

Although, if these changes did happen, I'd definitely go back to 3.09.

There is no need to summon him
He already said how bad is v4 according to him: hi v4

Id ask the question: what problem does adding a skill system solve?

Er, not remembering what all was being discussed in this thread (and not really feeling like rereading it to get context), it really depends on what you mean by "skill system". But if you're thinking of one of

                  1) the player receives points on level up that he invests into various abilities, or
                  2) there are special techniques that the player can learn over the course of the game

those are both rather significant changes to the gameplay, and to the extent that Vanilla is intended to be the most conservative version of Angband out there, they'd need to be extensively tested before going in. And it's not clear that there's even consensus that such things would be wanted -- what problem in the existing gameplay would they solve.

Also, SAngband is all about option #1, and I believe FA and Un include option #2 (and Sil, though it's not clear you can consider Sil to be an Angband variant, given how vastly different it apparently is...).
