    getting some better resistance

    Hi,

currently have my half-elf ranger on lvl 35, not quite daring to go to go as far as dungeon lvl 40 but I hover around the high 30's.

One thing I notice is that I need some better resistance - from fear, drain life, lower stats, blindness and disenchantment mainly. Oh, I also get slowed occasionally. What's the easiest way to get this? Just keep hovering around lvl 35 until I find some better armour / weapons?

This is the resistance I have:
    Free action
resistance to acid, lightn, fire, cold, bright light, darkness, confusion, shards, nexus
    sustained STR, DXT
I also have Resistance of Scarabtarices (sold some better weapons to buy it from the black market), but that isn't as useful as I thought it would be.

Also, I understand there are resistances that protect my equipment too - how do I get that?! I hate it when my rods are destroyed! More so my arrows of slay dragon!

    thanks for the tips!

Blindness isn't that important because you have rdark and rlight.

It is more vital to get rpoison. (At least use the spell if necessary, but you probably still have a high failure rate).
Check out the hidden resistance of your armor of elvenkind. Otherwise look for a ring of rpoison at the black market.

Against fear carry potions of heroism.

Getting slowed can't be prevented, use potions of speed or staff to counter.

And yet I'm still getting blind sometimes - why is that then? Not that it ever lasts long.

So far all poison is weak acting and short lasting - I usually pray cure poison mid or end battle, and then rest up till I'm healthy again.

Will poison get much worse as I go deeper?

I'm getting frustrated at not being able to find enough *Identify*. Even when I scum the town (another Q about that too...) I can hardly find enough - just look at all the un-id'd stuff at home. Its taken me ages to id this much! Where can I get more *Identify* from?

Against fear carry potions of heroism.
For this I just switch from hand combat to arrows and rods, which is usually more effective (for a ranger) anyway. potions just take up another inventory spot, and I'm a hoarder!

OK. Once I get used to the monsters that slow, I think I can shoot from afar. You can see the bunch of potions of speed - they come in handy even if I haven't been slowed!

      thanks for the tips!

You are already in a dangerous region for poison breathers.
Basilisk can be dangerous, greater basilisk could be deadly (instant kill).
There are also drolems, lots of dragons and wyrms which breath poison.

*Identify" is sort of a lottery game. Sometimes they come abundant sometimes not.

You can be blinded by a spell or (occasionally) melee as well; you get a save against the spell, though, which will get better the better your saving throw gets. Most situations you can get out of with !CCW and if necessary !Speed.

The danger is poison breath - big poison breathers generally start at about 2000 ft. An unresisted poison breath from a powerful enough monster can do 800HP; if you see something you even suspect might breathe poison, cast the resist spell, and look out for a permanent source.

Even a bunch of poison (air) hounds could be dangerous - if you get slowed and they manage to gain multiple breaths on you.

Watch out for more dangerous hounds too. There are plasma hounds, gravity hounds and multi-hued hounds all of which have killed some of my chars.

The only thing which protects your items from getting destroyed by elemental attacks are immunities. And they're rare =) So just avoid those attacks

OK, so I should have kept one of those rpoison rings. I just liked my +5 STR and +4 DEX (which I had to get rid of for see invis). But I guess I'm finding enough !str etc so my stats are slowly increasing.

I didn't know about the big poison breathers, lucky I haven't met any yet!

What I meant to say before about scumming is: is it generally frowned on? If I can't find enough *Identify* and I continually go to lvl1, wait, go to town, check black market, repeat is this considered cheating?

(edit): I just found Kavlax the many headed with a pray-detect monsters (or whatever, book a, spell b!) Is he a big poison breather? I don't know anything about him yet!

(edit2): What a pansy! I got him running with 6 arrows of slay dragon, and a couple more generic arrows with +x+y. He dropped about 7 items but they were all just plain weapons +small. Nothing useful, ripped off!

                thanks!

Some hardcore players might call it cheating, but it is a very common practice, I think.
I am doing town scumming always if the alchemy shop doesn't stock the restore "skill" potions I just need or if the magic books are not in stock or (in older versions) for scrolls of recall (they are always in stock in newer game versions).

                    Good, me too!

Now that I do more archery I'm needing the restore stats potions less and less. However, the levels are so full of junk lately that I can usually find the restore potion I need without having to go to town anyway...

Somehow I got my player to level 35 without noticing, so that opened up some more spells (eg recall) so I don't have to go to town for that either...
