I hate the idea of recalling to a lesser depth to target particular items. It might be useful on rare occasions, but it would be terrible to design the game to emphasize that the player do so.
It's more than just wanting non-good drops. E.g., I want to be able to learn a weapon of slay orc. Kind of hard to do if there aren't any orcs. I have carried wands of sleep monster for more than 5 DLs waiting for something that doesn't give me "the foo is unaffected". Wimps fulfill a role in the chain. What's the problem? If they get in your way, you kill them. If you worry that killing an orc at DL80 and producing a DL40 drop is unbalancing at DL80, IMO that means the standard DL40 drop must be too good.
