That will help somewhat because you can easily get to whatever depth is most ideal for what you need.
I hate the idea of recalling to a lesser depth to target particular items. It might be useful on rare occasions, but it would be terrible to design the game to emphasize that the player do so.

It's more than just wanting non-good drops. E.g., I want to be able to learn a weapon of slay orc. Kind of hard to do if there aren't any orcs. I have carried wands of sleep monster for more than 5 DLs waiting for something that doesn't give me "the foo is unaffected". Wimps fulfill a role in the chain. What's the problem? If they get in your way, you kill them. If you worry that killing an orc at DL80 and producing a DL40 drop is unbalancing at DL80, IMO that means the standard DL40 drop must be too good.

It's more that the chump monsters at dlvl 80 are (possibly) preventing more dangerous monsters from being generated. Though IMO we should flesh out the deep monster list if we're going to add max depth restrictions to monster generation.

I got a quick question of life draining. Say I have 10,000 exp points and get 500 drained. I kill the draining onster that normally gives 100 exp. Does my max exp become 10,100, or did I "lose" that 100 exp because I was drained?

I believe when you're drained, 10% goes towards your max and 90% goes towards restoring the drain. So your max is now 10,010 and your drained goes from 9,500 to 9,590 (although I may be wrong about the last part and your drained may go to 9,600). In either case, you're gaining less max, but you are catching up so eventually you won't be drained at all, even without a !restore life.
