Ok, a new RC is out. It has the following changes:

    - help on birth options is now available during the game (rather than only during character creation)

    - mimics are now *much* harder to spot before they attack you

    - all level feelings now fit on one line

    - squelching "bad" is more intelligent (+dam > +hit > +ac) - that fixes the Gold DSM bug

    - the crash on landing a killing blow *might* be fixed - please post if it happens with this build

    - Timo's flickering/minimap/slowdown bug *might* be fixed - reports welcome

    - sale prices have been doubled in selling mode - there should be enough money now

Reminder: please post bug reports on this build in the Development forum, starting a new thread for each new bug. Thanks.

Is this a reversion back towards earlier pricing?

            Yes - it's now 2/3rds of the 3.1.x pricing rather than 1/3rd.

You do realize they were reduced to 1/3rd of the values in 3.1.2, yes? So now they're at 2/3rds of that "original" value.

And please, when you say that a change is bad, say why it is bad. Same if you think a change is good!

I honestly don't understand why you are so against change - any and all change. Any game can, in general, always be improved upon in some way - it takes an extremely long time for a complex game to fully mature, and Angband is kind of special in that it has had many, many more years of development (and probably will have more in the future) than almost any other digital game. Everything in Angband now is there as the result of someone looking at the game and deciding they could make an addition/change for the better - aside from Robert Koenecke creating Moria in the first place, of course.

Ah, but even Koeneke could have been said to be improving upon Rogue, couldn't he?
If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then why are beholders so freaking ugly?

I dunno, would it count as a variant split?

i think any radical change should be saved for a varient, theres already lots.

vanilla should remain true to itself~

development can hurt a game, greatly~ look at diablo 2!, if anyone wanting deeper insights on these serious issues, please feel free to pm me.

As has been discussed in many other threads, there's no way you're going to find a maintainer who isn't willing to tweak the code. You're asking someone to take all the responsibility of maintaining Vanilla (fixing bugs, working on not-very-interesting projects) without getting any of the fun (improving the game). That's simply not going to happen.

Fortunately, previous versions of the game are available, so you can always play the Vanilla you like best.

Also, if you have important insights, I see no reason why they should be kept private.

Finally, Diablo 2's development made important improvements to the game, at least as far as I played (which was something around 1.11, I think -- they'd added skill synergies and new runewords at the very least).

Dos, if you think things are good now, then don't play nightlies, and don't upgrade the game when a new version comes out. It's really that simple.
