Ah, rendering =Mouse trash once again. Maybe if they lowered the damage penalty...This thread, it needs more rage. -- Napstopher WalkenComment

The difficulty is in balancing the benefits of an item with the penalties and with the expected character power level. Early on it's not unreasonable to ask a character to use items that have a near-zero "net power level", since the penalties hurt things that the character can deal with (e.g. lower AC, but you kill things faster so on balance things work out). Later on, the character is expected to take on much more powerful enemies; if they're armed solely with net-zero items then they're simply not going to be powerful enough, not at least with the current monster set and damage formulae.
Rings of the Mouse are currently niche items: they're usable by non-melee characters (mages, priests, possibly rangers) and by those in the rare situation where the DEX boost overcomes the damage penalty. That's fine. More than adequate user base. Characters that want an early-game combat boost should be using Reckless Attacks; otherwise, you can wait for =DEX and Cloaks/Boots of Stealth to show up to get what =Mouse gives you.Comment
-
With mixed blessing jewelry, basically I use escaping with pure casters and reckless attack with everyone else. The rest pretty much gets squelched as soon as found. Ring of the mouse might be balanced, but it just fills too small a niche to bother with. If it were amulet of the mouse, I would use it.
Ironman is a different matter entirely as the average time between "upgrades" is greater.Comment

I have indeed retired the ring of mouse as stats bumped upwards. The loss of stealth hasn't been noticeable to me and I've needed the increased damage as I've nudged up against the 1900' poison death all ye who pass this depth sign. Still haven't found anything to plug my poison hole aside from a ring. Right now I'm finding my biggest issue to be ood uniques/nasties. That AMHD that cropped up was.. exciting. Good incentive to keep working on calris.
Is poison usually such a chore to cover or is the rng just taunting me?
Also potions of speed have saved me in some unpleasant situations but I'm nearly out, is there a good depth for looking at for more? They don't seem to crop up anymore down here
I think I'm going to sacrifice some damage and risk going deeper carefully.
Edit: Clearly I need to complain about the rng more on here, some nice troll just gave me a ring of speed +10 at 1950'Last edited by Imp; April 5, 2011, 14:56.Comment

The best place to look for !speed is on DL 1. Sad but true. There is a boost at DL 40, but your best choices are to look for them on the ground at DL 1 or to kill hordes of weakish monsters wherever you are.Comment
-
The black market's also a good place for speed potions, since they can show up in stacks there. Generally my playstyle involves carrying a couple of speed potions for emergencies and stashing the rest in my home; once I get a staff of speed (or reliable casting of Haste Self) all potions get saved for the endgame, so I can take on Sauron/Morgoth without worrying about charge drain, spell failure rates, or mana supplies.
I think the issue with speed potion generation rates is that there's much less competition for potions on dlvl 1 than on dlvl 40. Thus even if speed potions are "more common" at dlvl 40, any given potion at dlvl 1 is more likely to be a speed potion.Comment

Dive! With your speed and stealth you should be able to avoid most too dangerous monsters with ease. Kill weaklings in your way (even novice rangers drop stat-potions at 3000+').Comment

Nearly all deeper "U":s are summoners, so be careful around them. Greater Q:s summon not one but many greater variant of their corresponding type and they have tele-to spells, also drujs can do that same, so graveyards are very very dangerous.
Get rod of probing, use your stealth and that to learn which monsters are worth fighting. Once you have 600+ HP, Basic4, poison, confusion, chaos, sound, blindness and +20+ speed you can risk being in LoS of any single monster for at least one turn.
Tarrasque, Huan, Carcharoth, Vecna, etc. are to be avoided until you are confident that you can fight pretty much anything. Mouth of Sauron is much worse than you would expect based on books.Comment

Having only played warriors and not very well at that the rogue seems pretty broken. Being able to detect and plan what I engage and how along with having the ability to haste self, boost resists etc. really helps survivability. Thanks for the run away advice also, I think part of my previous poor play was in thinking anything on a given level should be something I can kill and not understanding that it was more of a do what you can safely and move on. process. Only real annoyance right now is life drain which is a small thing and time hounds which sure do suck.Comment

I've never quite recognized the value in the rod of probing. Every time I use one, it never tells me anything more than how many HP things have left. That's useful for figuring the breather damage you might be looking at, but beyond that I usually already have a rough idea how long it's going to take to kill something. Is it supposed to tell me anything more than HP, or am I misjudging the value of the exact HP number?Comment
