What should be my objective at this point? I've been diving, casting detect enchantment, gathering up any loot I can, and killing any ancient dragons that I run across. Any specific monsters I should be targeting at this point? I'm not too familiar with rogues. I got lucky with a nice crossbow, but my killing power isn't phenomenal.

Also, what is the difference between detect treasure and detect enchantments? Is it worth it to use the latter?

Finally, when I run across a vault with monsters that I can't handle, is there any way to get at the loot? Or do I need to be able to destroy or TO all the monsters therein?

    Thanks!

You seem to have a bunch of random stuff in your inventory. It's helpful to post your dump right before you're about to go into the dungeon, so we can see what your "standard kit" is. Regardless, you should be carrying more ?Phase, more ?WoR, more !CCW, fewer bog-standard bolts (if for no other reason than so you can stick your Slay Evil bolts into the quiver without using up an extra slot), and I generally inscribe my escape gear with !* so I don't use them accidentally.

I'm surprised you're carrying all of those spellbooks. My rogue carried only book 1 for a very long time, eventually adding book 3 for Satisfy Hunger and Lesser Recharging (so he could recharge his perception staves and staff of speed), and, very much later, book 4 for haste self. Rogues are lousy spellcasters. On that note, since they are so bad at spellcasting, that ring of Intelligence you're wearing isn't helping you all that much. Twice as bad as bad is bad. The Ring of Damage, or a Ring of CON, would be better.

...since when does Cammithrim give combat bonuses?

Your objectives, as always are 1) don't die, and 2) kill Morgoth. Just keep climbing that power curve as best you can.

Detect Treasure should be strictly better than Detect Enchantments; the latter only exists so non-rogue arcane casters eventually get some form of object detection. Given that by the time it's available practically everything in the dungeon is magical anyway, I'm not certain I see the point of the distinction...but whatever.

Vault monsters must be killed or TO'd, unless you fancy trying to sneak around them. I don't think your stealth is up to that task though. If you had a source of Destruction, it would remove all the monsters and non-artifact items from the vault, but that's generally considered a bit of an exploit.

You should be collecting scrolls of enchant to-hit to use on Calris. It may take 50 of them. You should also look for a ring of strength, both for sustain and to increase number of blows.

You might want to use Cammithrim instead of Cambeleg until you get disenchantment resist. It is worse, but that is the point. It would be a terrible shame if Cambeleg got disenchanted. Your goal is to kill M. You will most likely wear Cambeleg when you face M. Don't risk it without a good reason.

I would at least be carrying the katana of Gondolin for ESP. If I'm remembering the dump right, the Westeronese was the better combat weapon, but ESP is very handy.

That Gondolin doesn't give ESP. Only +1 radius light, which is as useless as random feature can be.

Just for fun try two rings of Mouse to max your DEX. That gave my early hobbit rogue five blows with light weapon so soon that with slaying gauntlets they made quite a lot more damage than without. With Cambeleg and +2 from Westernesse you might get the same.

Maybe you have been lucky and all the weapons of Gondolin you have seen were with ESP.
That is possible but not always the case. Weapons of Gondolin get a random ability.

Or just very light weapon like highly enchanted dagger. Adding +8 to 18/40 gives 18/120 DEX which means blow index 8 for DEX, STR 18/30 gives STR index 50 * 4 = 200 / weapon weight. Five blows means power index 7 (100/20 = 5) which in turn means 200/7 = 28 which is too light (min 30), but you get the next best which is 4.76 blows (4.8?).

                With (+3 from STR and +8 from Cambeleg + 1d4 + +9 to dam) * 4.76 = 107.1

You are currently doing 78 against orcs, trolls and giants (Ogres at this point)

That leaves 29 point difference, so 30/4.76 = 6 points can be removed from to_dam for this to be effective. Not likely that you find two with +4 DEX/Stealth and only -3 To_Dam. However something like *thanc dagger or just branded dagger with +10 to_dam would benefit from this.

(started writing this 9:15, finished 16:40. A bit distraction between....)

Thanks for the valuable insights. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that Haun can breathe frost for crazy amounts of damage. Oh well, live and learn!

In my case it's "Die, swear a lot, brood and learn"

Recently lost a paladin to Glaurang. Long story: out of position and overconfidence. Never even looking at that guy again till I have immunity to fire.

My neighbours probably learned a few new swear words that day.
