    Keyboard basic keymap image

I made this up for a friend I'm introducing to the game, and if it's of any use to you here, feel free to use it.

If you want the Photoshop (CS3) psd file to make changes or corrections, just let me know.

Is that a US keyboard layout?

It's rather different from my UK one - the basic QWERTY letters are the same places, but a lot of the symbols are in different places.

Yes, that's a bog-standard US Windoze keyboard. Infuriatingly, it has no pound sign (as in pound sterling, not hash).

Omg, I haven't noticed that W is free for hotkeys. Wow ... wheee!

I play with a Dvorak keyset, which puts ' , . in the spots where Q, W, and E are -- great for access to hotkeys. I typically hotkey ', ", !, @, #, $, Q, F, B, and X, in games where I need lots of hotkeys. These are always easily accessible with my left hand alone, while my right rests on the numeric keypad for movement. F is always hotkeyed to "light room"; if I need to refill my lantern or torch then I can escape the hotkey using \ first. B always goes to "identify item" using whatever means are appropriate. ! is typically my "target closest monster and use ranged attack" hotkey (yes, I know about 'h'; I've been using ! longer than 'h' was around). ' and " are detection effects.

There's tons of room for hotkeys without resorting to the difficult-to-access function keys. It's great.

Very nice. Every variant should have one.

And "attack without moving" to the control keys.

And "tunnel" for ctrl too. Or is ctrl basically "alter move" (disarm, open, attack without moving, tunnel)?

good ideas, and thanks. I don't use certain keys, and hence was unfamiliar with them. I come from an old-school "use . to run" instead of shift-direction, too.

I'm glad I made this graphic, because I hadn't known about the 'n' command to repeat last. now I find it valuable.

You are also missing "h", it is "fire first ammunition at nearest target".

Nice, now we only need one for the roguelike keyset.

A possible improvement would be color coding the keys for different kinds of actions. Movement, looking around, inventory management, device activation, magic and so on.

that can be done. I wish I had an automated way to generate this, though.

                            any ideas for color schemes?

and if I can find a UK keyboard image, I can make alternates.. I assume that it's just symbols that are in different places.

Missed that ] is for item list like how [ is for monsters. Otherwise, wonderful help for novices and those seeking keymap locations
