I know in an older version (probably right after Ben Harrison claimed frog.knows and turned it into an actual version) I tried tunneling through an unrevealed secret door, and it revealed itself.

I assumed that I stopped tunneling because I discovered that the wall was actually a door.

"Is there any point in having broken doors at all?"

I think the point of this question is that broken doors are essentially open tiles (although they can't have items --- minor difference), and are basically an inconvenience inasmuch as they can be confused with open doors, which are actually relevant.

They do actually serve a purpose. If you have detected doors, and you hear a monster bashing doors open, you can sometimes tell where they're coming from.
