    My previous two variants (Cthangband and Hellband) have both been very heavily themed. This time, I'm more interested in taking keeping the feel of Vanilla, but with (at least initially) the best features of those variants.

    As far as plans go, I'm intending to get the Channeler class sorted out and then release a v1.0, so that I can get feedback on how the two new classes are balanced.

    Then, for version 2, I'm intending to move in a Cthangband direction (but keeping the Vanilla flavour) by putting in:
    • Themed levels - where a "vault type" is chosen when the level is populated, and half the monsters that are used to populate the level are taken from that type.
    • Multiple dungeons & towns.
    • Grid-based wilderness - I was thinking about connecting the dungeons to make it a 3d grid, but I think separate themed dungeons is better.
    • Towers (dungeons that go up instead of down and always have small levels)
    • Portals to travel quickly from town to town once you've visited one (and occasionally one in a dungeon).
    • Natural cave levels (done fractally, maybe?)

    After that, I'm open to suggestions.

    In terms of the source code, I'm used to using CVS at work and SourceSafe at home - I've never used Git. I'm likely to continue to do this and just put the source code up for download in a zip file or something, unless there's a good reason not to.

      Have you used Subversion? it's very similar to CVS but more modern and better supported. Almost all the basic commands work the same.

      The nice thing about making your source code available online is that if someone wants to submit a patch to you, they can patch against the version of the code you're actually using, not the last public version you put up (which you may have completely refactored since then).

      There are a bunch of places that let you host free projects online (although obviously the source is public... that's the point), for instance: http://code.google.com/p/support/wiki/GettingStarted

      Git and Mercurial are the new, cool version control systems, and they have a bunch of advantages over CVS/SVN. But I don't want to make the best the enemy of the good here. The one good thing about using Git is that it might make it easier to pull changes from V as it develops, rather than starting with a snapshot.

      Anyway, good luck!

        Oh wow. We are not worthy!

        Seriously, I had no idea you were the author of not just one cool old variant, but two!

        Not that it makes much difference to anything, but it's nice to know.

          Hijacked!!!

          Anyways...
          I actually wrote up an additional, Harpy player race, so if I'm going to post my entire edited folders, I might as well add them both at once. I still have a few tweaks for the Harpies, and I might make a few adjustments to Yeeks too.

          Regarding Yeek adjustments... does anyone know how I can expand their Social Status a bit? I was also thinking that for the Histories file, that the Entries before 50 were social status, and that I needed a wider range. I'm wondering if I can redo their history flow thusly:
          # Yeek --> 27 --> 72 --> 29 --> 70 --> 71 --> 28

          ...so, where the 2nd entry is a descriptor that doesn't influence social class, and the final "head adornment" does influence status. I'd think that this would work, provided I rewrote the entries properly.

          Also, since it seems popular, I'd swap either "vestigial horns" or "velvety antlers" for "satiny rabbit ears."

          And finally... if you're going to add another Yeek Unique, I'd advocate a Yeek Queen or Empress. She'd be a Bad Mama Jama (for a yeek, anyways).

            @Buzzkill: Would attaching my edited Limits, p_race & p_hist files to this thread work for you, or is there a better way to post my variant stuff?

              I use mediafire.com (mediafire.com/buzzkill) for free file hosting. It has been spam free and reputable in my experience . I'd just create an account and post your whole V folder there... then it has a home. Of course, posting the relevant files here would work too. I am lazy, but I suppose I could copy and paste two files .

                Hm, I can't get it to work. I still get the human history for my custom race. Did I do something wrong?

                # Half-Dragon --> 27 --> 28 --> 29 --> 70 --> 71 --> 72

                I added this at the bottom of the P_hist:
