    Store Menu?

The last time I played Angband regularly it was maintained by Ben Harrison... so I'm sort of old-school when it comes to commands and such.

One of the things I find really disconcerting about the new game is the lack of a command bar at the bottoms of Stores. I realize that the way Stores work now is probably streamlined to be "better," but I really don't like it. Is there a way for me to put that back, via options? If not, is there anyone who's interested in coding the old store menu back?

    Completely unrelated, but I can remember the very first time I played Sinistar at a 7-11 store of all places. You're peacefully shooting enemy ships and mining those little sparkley bits and then all of a sudden "I am Sinistar. Beware, I live." Then it come out of nowhere and eats you. It's actually a little scary the very first time he comes after you... or at least it was as I remember it. {me goes to fire up MAME}

Yeah, Sinistar was definitely one of the most memorable old-school arcades.

Actually I think he was creepiest when you *weren't* playing... just walking along trying to choose which cabinet next and allofasudden Sinistar's attract mode shouts at you "I HUNGER!!"
So you ride yourselves over the fields and you make all your animal deals and your wise men don't know how it feels to be thick as a brick.

...somehow, .wav files just don't capture the joy-stick gripping terror of the Original Big Bad waking up to come devour you.

        But anyways... anything on-topic?

Try hitting '?', that's as close as you'll get.

Duderini, how did we get to discussing Sinistar?? (Presumably there was some reference in a sig or avatar? I have all that turned off to keep the SNR up.)

Is there a way to turn off Stacking of staves & wands in Stores?

I don't mind it in Inventory, but I find (especially at early levels) that the most economic way to Identify is to buy a Staff of Perception, use it up, and resell it. To my dismay, I discovered that selling a Staff (0 Charges) to the store lowers the average number of charges per staff (and price, but I'd happily pay more for more charges).

No, but what version are you playing? There was a change made so that staves are recharged when you sell them back, so it isn't so terrible any more. I don't know whether that was in 3.1.2v2. You might need to download a nightly version.

                      v3.0.9b

According to (uhm... wherever I downloaded it from..?) it's the most stable version as of about 10 days ago.

Yeah, everything's changing pretty fast at the moment - including the definition of stability

                        3.1.2v2 beta is pretty stable.

I recall now... 3.0.9b has a "windows console version" where versions newer than that only offer source code, graphical version, or Mac. I was operating under the assumption that I'd need to compile from source (no idea how to do that) and I don't like graphical... so, that's why I picked the version I picked.

For the record, still hating the "new" stores.

Yeah. What you call the "windows console version" (also known as, er, the DOS version) was removed for 3.1 - I think it was part of the non-GPL purge but not sure. Sorry.

What's the objection to "graphical", though? Assuming that by that you mean the "windowed mode with option of using representational art instead of ASCII". You should never be forced to use the tiles; ASCII is to my knowledge always an option.
