    50 ways to lose your pl@yer

    "The problem is all inside your head", she said to me
    The answer is easy if you take it logically
    I'd like to help you in your struggle to be free
    There must be fifty ways to lose your player

    She said it's really not my habit to intrude
    Furthermore, I hope my meaning won't be lost or misconstrued
    But I'll repeat myself, at the risk of being crude
    There must be fifty ways to lose your player
    Fifty ways to kill your player

    Attack that pack, Jack;
    And crack that vault, Gault!
    No need to quaff, Geoff
    Just YASD
    Kavlax is a wuss, Gus
    You don't need to detect much!
    Just hold down the key, Lee
    And YASD

    EDIT:
    Fixed Y'S D => YASD per editorial criticism.

      Splendid. So we are at [6/50]? To what tune do I sing it? (Sorry, I used to program Z80 in machine code in hex while my friends shook their heads listening to pop.)

          ::::APPLAUSE::::

          For those who weren't alive during the mid 70s, it's set to the tune of "50 ways to leave your lover", by Paul Simon.

          also...

          Clone that Dracolich, Rich.
          Wait one more round to heal, Neal.

          Unfortunately, no name rhymes with "Tarrasque".

            The original only has 5 or 6 out of 50. However, this attempt was inspired by YAYASDT. There must be at least 50 of those around here somewhere.

            As for where it came from...
            "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" was a #1 pop song with legs. It was still making the rounds well into the 80s.
            Not up to the level of "Ring of Fire"* or "(Ghost) Riders in the sky"**, but still a respectable run.

                  It probably has the unique distinction of being not only a superb pop song in its own right, but also the inspiration for countless comic parodies. A number of these are listed on the wikipedia article, but not my favourite, which is the suicide rap Fifty Ways To Leave Your Body by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Okin.

                    <no main script, sorry>

                    PS: You can't lose your player, you ARE the player. Whenever I notice the PC being referred to as the 'player' in the code, I change it to 'PC' (which stands for 'player character' for those who aren't familiar with RPGs).

                    PPS: didn't mean to dis your parody. It's pretty cool. the player/PC thing is just a knitpicky pet peeve of mine

                    PPPS: Along the same lines, there's an actually recorded song parody about the many ways to die in Nethack: http://www.partiallyclips.com/filk/nethack/

                    http://sites.google.com/site/dajangbandwebsite/home (defunct and so old it's forked from Angband 3.1.0 -I think- but it's probably playable...)

                      @Will
                      I agree about "being the player", I just couldn't think of another word that scanned. (Character rhymes OK, but has too many syllables.)

                      As for additional YASD-related stink pinks...

                      Just hit that Ghoul Jewel
                      And Teleport Mort!
                      Step on that trap sap
                      And get Y'S D

                      Enough of the Stink Pinks. Let's see some angband strategy in higgledy piggledy (double dactyl) form.

                          the original is "get yourself free".
                          get Y'S D = get yourself dead. (Also, YASD doesn't scan well)

                              I don't see why you say it doesn't scan well.

                              isn't y a S d with the emphasis on the S [where it belongs ] practically a perfect match? 4 short syllables, with the same cadence, with the last one rhyming.
