    First Ever Retreat

I am proud of myself. I did what I consider my first ever retreat from a unique before even trying to attack... Usually I save scum (or whatever you call it) until I am able to beat it. I only once got into a spot I could not get out of without eventually killing the unique.

I saw 45 kobolds and Mugash on dlvl 7 or so with my lvl 10 or so priest... Didn't have OoD or anything besides a mace to cause any damage...

*maybe*, just *maybe* this could be my first character I never use backup saves with...

heh, I just dropped a level to end up right next to a mini vault guarded by kavlax who was about 12 levels out of depth. I immediately ran in the other direction and then approached the vault from a distance. Kavlax was one of the first out and I made two attempts to take him h2h. both ended up with him breathing on me and knocking me down to 24 and 36 HP from 300...

lead him out of the way, teleported to the other side and cleared out the rest of the vault picking up a number of of nice things[1][2] on the way. Kavlax was just too tough for me, but it doesn't mean you can't lead these big fella out of the way, steal their loot and then bail

[1] Pauragen, Azaghal, Barakkheled, Totila and BoS+5 (though that's going to the shop as I picked up Dal-i-Thalion earlier). Azaghal looks like a likely candidate for the next main weapon.. though I think I need to drop to statgain now and get a bit more dex...

[2] of course, now i need to be very careful of the RNG....

darn it, just found another vault (one with proper impenetrable walls, 2 circles with a corridor crossing the middle) and kavlax is right in the middle again... I need teleport other but I don't have it... still, I guess I'll clear the rest of the level and then approach the vault.. there's 6 items in there listed in red

When you can leave a level that has stat potions or an obvious artifact because it is too dangerous, your training will be complete

Don't play footsie with Kavlax unless you are at speed >= 10, or have a lot of HP, or both. If he breathes gravity, you are a goner.

He was my number one killer in the days when I didn't run away.

I ended up not doing so. I was hoping to find a wand of TO in the rest of the level, but what I did find was draebor who pushed me through the ceiling...

Run away from an artifact AND stat gain potions? Now you're pushing it...

I never died from Kavlax before... I am probably playing too cautious... The only uniques that ever gave me problems were Tarrasque and that angel that kept summoning and then "commanding me to return" in a non-adjacent square amongst his friends.

                  *edit*

Just had to use a backup save and then to boot, killed off my character by plowing through a line of hill orcs when one came down the other side of the hall and got me (I couldn't withstand two fronts of attack).

                  Oh well, still fun...

When you can walk away from a potion of augmentation without regret, your training will be complete.

                      Ee... that would sting still.

not as bad as watching it blow up to a @#%^ing cold hound though.

                        Ouch.

I was playing early levels and didn't buy too many WoR and had only 2 spellbooks each with my priest. When I encountered a pack of OOD fire hounds (hadn't even seen the light or dark hounds yet) who made quick work of boht of my first spell books...

Hounds are no fun... Aren't hounds evil? Shouldn't they have been detected by my Detect Evil?

Nope, hounds are natural. Nether Hounds are evil, IIRC, but that's it.

I diisagree. Hounds are evil. Especially Time Hounds.

Heheh... I remember once when I was diving in Entroband, I got myself into a situation so gnarly (on a tiny level) that even when there was an unidentified Incandescent Light of Yeduson on the tile next to me, I couldn't go for it or I'd be toast*. Through a lot of teleporting and potion-quaffing, I managed to stay exactly one turn ahead of death long enough to reach the stairs.

That rush is what makes banding worthwhile for me

*I do turn on autopickup in such situations, but even then it would have been fatal to go for the artifact.
