    Strategy advice for fighting the big two as a warrior?

    I'm playing a Dunadan warrior on the verge of heading down to kill Sauron and Morgoth, just after I finish off the rest of the uniques. This is my first time reaching this far, so I'm understandably nervous -- although filling out my resistances around 4500' and finding Ringil just a few minutes ago have diminished the nervousness. What I now want to know is, what are the best strategies for defeating the big two as a warrior?

    I died right before I was able to take them, I actually tried Sauron but I wasn't quite ready.

    Anyway, I died because I stopped paying attention for one second and something's summons got me.

    Also sauron hates acid, acid branded missiles are great.

      Sauron can be treated pretty much like any other powerful unique. With a warrior against Morgoth, the basic strategy of shoot him as he comes toward you, melee until too damaged, phase and heal, repeat works pretty well, especially after the terrain is broken up a bit. Remember that you will need Banishment/Mass Banishment to get rid of summons where necessary, and in melee he drains charges and all stats - it may be worth reworking your gear to include sustain STR. You have *way* more speed than is necessary - I'd actually be tempted to use Narya instead of the =Speed (even at +16!), and stay hasted with potions.

        I take it from your empty quiver that you haven't used your bow much? Impressive that you took down all those uniques with melee only.

        If you can find some acid-branded ammo, Sauron will go down very easily.

        Since you already aggravate from the Palantir, you might try wearing Umbar and Haradrim, which would give you two shots per turn with a 7x crossbow. Pretty sick if you have branded ammo even just regular ammo with a +15 damage.

        Haradrim also adds 1 blow and +5 damage per hit! Swapping speed for Nenya might be worthwhile for the extra damage and cold immunity.

        When fighting Morgoth, you absolutely must keep your HP above 600 because he has powerful damage spells. If there get to be too many summons, you can "teleport other" M away and read a *Destruction* or mass banish. He'll find his way back to you rather quickly.

        A way to avoid summons is to tunnel into a corner so you can only be attacked from 3 tiles instead of 8. Eventually you will get bounced out from Morgoth's earthquake melee effect.

        It should be pretty easy given your equips/stats as long as you are careful. You could look for a couple more *Healing* or Life potions if you are nervous.

          Thanks, all! My main reason for the ridiculous speed is to avoid being double-turned by a monster due to my own carelessness... I've reached the point where I fight uniques carefully, but my technique on anything else is slipping. I just found Feanor, however, placing me at +50 unencumbered speed. I think I can safely swap out the ring of speed.

          I had already swapped in Haradrim before reading any responses, after I found that all of Thorin's resistances had been covered. Haradrim sustains strength, thankfully. Swapping in Umbar also sounds sensible, once I find some good ego bolts. I believe the reason for having no ammo in the dump above is that I dropped it all to make room for carting artifacts back to town.

          My technique for virtually all late-game uniques was to dig a twisty little passage into the rock and melee from its far end, rendering missile weapons moot. I figure, after reading many accounts of people overwhelmed by summoned creatures, that the risks of such summoning outweighed the benefits of missile weapons. The only uniques to thwart this strategy were the Tarrasque (whom I killed on the second try, consuming about a dozen !CCW in the process), Feagwath (with his escort of ethereal and tunneling liches), and Maeglin (whom I still haven't killed, because in both of my previous encounters he summoned more uniques).

          Now, time to attempt Sauron!

          Edit: What a rush! I take the stairs and land next to Maeglin. After hitting him once, he summons three uniques (Polyphemus, the Emperor Quylthulg, and Azriel) and some other nasties -- now, all the uniques that I have seen but not killed are on the same level. I only had two -TO, not enough to make me safe, so I teleported out and landed right next to Polyphemus. He went down fairly easily, but before I could recover Maeglin had tunneled straight to me. Thankfully, his second summon was considerably less inspired, surrounding me completely by light hounds and clear hounds. After that, I caught Azriel, killed Sauron in an anti-summoning corridor, and tunneled out from behind a wall that the Qulylthulg had teleported next to. All 96 of the uniques I have seen are now dead! Now it's just a bit of scrounging for good bolts, then I take on the boss.

            I did it! I took an extremely conservative strategy against Morgoth, and it worked out. I started off by reading a scroll of destruction at the stairs, and whenever Morgoth summoned dragons or undead I would zap him away and re-destroy the area (I only had two banishment scrolls starting the battle, but a dozen destruction ones). Every time my health dipped into the 700s I phase doored away (I think working in a destroyed area made this far safer) and healed up; in the end, I used one potion of healing, one potion of *healing*, and two dozen or so !CCW.

            Although I only asked for advice toward the very end, I want to thank everyone on this forum for providing a wealth of perspectives and advice. I drew heavily from it as my most successful character to date slowly passed milestone after milestone. My previous two best characters had both died to drolems in the mid-game, so I really did not know what the end-game was like, but after combing this site for information I was able to adapt my style and anticipate my most likely mistakes. Thanks once again for helping me to take my place among what I imagine is a very small set of people, they who have actually won this ridiculous game!

              Good job!
              Beyond those tricks, the only other thing I can suggest is maximize your damage, even if you have to go without non-essential resists.
              Such as: gloves + damage
              Hammerhand, since it's +9

              But it doesn't matter, since you're character already won, and was extremely powerful anyway.

                Congratulations! I also melee'd Sauron and Morgoth to death with my winning warrior.

                The end game fights are really just:

                1) Check to make sure your resistances and sustains are covered.
                2) Farm the dungeon for consumables.
                3) Be patient.

                I have always been (and still am) annoyed that the final fights take SO long to prepare for strictly with consumables instead of gear. On almost every character I have been ready gear-wise WAY before I had enough consumables (except my mage, with which I just killed Morgoth using no consumables).
