Can you have more than one thing causing a special feeling on a floor?

Level feeling are caused by both 'out of depth' monsters and objects and are broken (last time I checked) and can probably be safely ignored. The only feeling I pay any attention at all to is the "superb" feeling which usually indicates a vault and/or artifacts on the level.

it actually seems to work well for me. What i wanted to know was because i don't have the Preserve mode on. So, can "special" levels be the TWO? Pit/nest/vault+artifact?

When playing without preserve mode, any artifact generated on the floor will force a special feeling. However, enough features of interest (pits/nests/normal items) can also trigger a special feeling when there is no artifact present, so false positives are possible.

I haven't played vanilla for ages, but it used to work this way:

With preserve off: artifacts always cause special feeling; a player ghost always causes special feeling; monster pits/nests sometimes cause special feeling.

I don't play with preserve on if I have a chance to switch it off. But I guess in preserve mode only a player ghost guarantees special feeling. And vanilla don't have them anymore.

okay. i killed 5 uniques (well, *destroyed* one) and have killed their minions. Two zones of the map were filled with monsters, one was a vault. but what is sickening me most is the fact that i have no identification left (the fire hounds had a fun time) SO HOW do i select from those HUGE piles of junk, the good things?

              Add two black ogre companies
A seven headed Hydra died today. Power of bows, artifact one.

I would pick them all up and psuedo ID them. As far as picking between the different {ego} items, the only solution for you would be to try them all out untill you learn the properties of them.

The non-splendid ego weapons are generally useless. The only real exception is something like a mace of disruption of slay evil. If you auto-inscribe the big three weapons with !k [which means "don't squelch this item"], you can afford to squelch "excellent but not splendid" weapons once you are wielding a decent weapon.

                      Rip. Restart.
Although failing to detect traps is a mistake, your far bigger mistake was continuing to explore the dungeon after exhausting your supply of healing potions. If you run out of healing potions, recall to town immediately. If you run out of escapes, recall to town immediately.

I almost wish there was an option to pester the player when either of the above happens. "You've exhausted your supply of healing! Do you want to recall to town (Y/n)?" I, too, sometimes forget to recall if my last potion or scroll is used up during a tense moment when I can't spare a turn to immediately ?WoR. But in reality you probably ought to recall even before your last potion is exhausted - you never know when you might get confused twice in a row.

As a general rule, if there's more stuff than I can carry, and I've no ID, I keep artifacts first (duh), then unknown flavored items, then either wait for pseudo (if I have the time) or start [k] destroying armours and weapons that haven't pseudoed if I'm in a hurry.

What does that accomplish? You know artifacts on pickup, is there some flavor of ego that you can't destroy that I'm not aware of?

Knowing artifacts on pickup is a recent change--many veterans will have other habits for identifying artifacts.
