    'l'ook is a store command.

You 'I'nspect with the 'I' key. Your need to identify depends upon how well you know the ego list. E.g. an ego weapon with a stealth bonus is always a defender, no need to identify unless you care which sustain it has. Items sell for more when identified.

The post by fph two messages up is exactly right, except that in addition you learn an ego when you learn a brand or slay. So if you hit an orc with a weapon with the gondolin ego, you learn all of the standard gondolin properties immediately, but you might still have to learn the random power.

Air Hounds breath poison, a hard resist to come by early, so you probably don't have it. Turning a corner or lighting a room to find a pack of them could equal death, but in the grand scheme of things they are not that bad. There are far far worse hounds yet to come should you survive long enough.

We have all been there. Live and learn. Detect traps via rod, wand, staff, scroll or spell should be fairly constant past DL10 or so. Paralysis, stat drain, confusion, are all bad. Summoning traps are the worst, or maybe falling through a trap door as you're getting ready to pick up those tasty items you nearly died fighting for.

What you really have to watch out for on those depths are ochre jellies. They've killed off enough of my characters that I banished them to lower depths in the monster.txt. At level 12 where they show up, albeit rarely, they're certain death unless I'm near stairs. They can go from outside detection radius to in my face very, very quickly. Even when I do see them I'm often powerless to do anything. Recall and pray.

I often try to carry 20-30 phase door scrolls. Dealing with ochre jellies then is expensive, but usually not fatal. Worst case you read the recall, then just phase until you get far enough away or in an unconnected corridor.

Incidentally this strategy works pretty well for me until I start getting to depths where my chance of phasing into groups of dangerous hounds/breathers is high. Usually by that point I have better escapes.

how do you exchange weapons? Finding a rod of treasure detection make me want to go digging.

Wield a new weapon (or armour) and it will replace the old one.

You might want to read a little about inscriptions to make tunneling and other stuff a little easier.

Also, for mac user reading this who had the smae problem as me trying to type this goddam thing in, on the language possibilities (toolbar) you should have a thing which alllows you to type that left curly bracket.

Mac keyboard layouts are the same as Windows keyboard layouts with the exception of the meta keys (Windows Alt => Mac Command, Windows Windows => Mac Option). Perhaps you're using a different language that doesn't use the QWERTY keyset?
