    Noob Advice

My apologies in advance for asking this guys but I've looked everywhere for the answers to these questions:

    - How do I enable the graphics? I have the requisite graphics file in the right file. Changing the values in the. ini file seems to crash the game.

    - How do I customise the addtional windows? How do I assign specific content to specific windows or is that automaticallt done?

    Many thanks in advance.

    If you're using Windows:
for graphics: Go to the options menu at the top of the window, then graphics and select old tiles.
for extra windows: go to visibility in the window menu at the top and select Term-1 (any maybe Term-2 and 3 depending on how many extra windows you want). Then in the options menu (=) choose (w) for subwindow display settings where you can choose what you want each extra window to show (monster list, object list, previous messages, etc).
If you're not using windows, I don't know.

Monster List and Object List are my 2 favorite windows to keep up when not playing full-screen or playing with dual-monitors. They have saved my butt several times and allowed me to find some goodies that I could have otherwise missed.

          Jelly pits

Let me use this thread to ask about jelly pits. I am not a very experienced player and today I had my second encounter with a jelly pit ever, this time it was with this character.

It was on dl15, cl27. I could barely escape thanks to my staff of Teleportation, but I saw no way of cleaning it. How can a rogue clean Jelly pits?

            don't?

Jelly pits provide very little loot and very much hassle. They are not worth dealing with at all. Neither are zoos when they start showing up.

You're probably right. From now on I'll just ignore them. I'll try to do them when I have won.

As a general rule, orc and troll pits may be worth dealing with; the others should be ignored. Unfortunately, ignoring Graveyards is tricky because they often contain Black Reavers (or worse, Nightcrawlers), who will chew up the dungeon as they chase you, letting their friends follow along.

At max level with proper CON and immunities, flavored dragon pits can be gold mines, but work up to that.

That's why you charge straight at them with your staff of destruction.

The only pits worth clearing are orc pits, troll pits, and Dragon pits, if you have the appropriate immunity. If you can't pretty much stand in the door and slaughter all the monsters inside, the pit isn't worth clearing either.

giant pits can be good, too. but i guess the seem kind of rare in the newer versions of V, and at greater depths they can have irksome titans...

Or if you're a priest and can melt their faces with 2 or 3 Dispel Evils

A mage can mana storm from the door also, but sometimes you blow up goodies on the floor.

I have also been trying to get the graphical version working, alas to no avail. I have 8x8.bmp, 16x16.bmp, 32x32.bmp & mask.bmp in my lib/xtra/graf file yet the options are greyed out when I fire up Angband and click the graphics header. Anyone got any ideas on why this is? I created a shortcut to the exe and tried the -g command but still no luck Any help much appreciated

It's just possible that you have to wait until you start playing to set the graphics. If you haven't yet, try to enable graphics when you already have dungeon or town displaying.
