    Problem Starting New Game

Whenever I open Angband and click "New" to start a new game I get nothing more than a small square... here is a screenshot:

Fixed it by switching the font from default to one of the other options.

I vote to switch to the SDL port, I think...

Sorry to ask a stupid question, but does Windows support SDL natively, or do you have to install something extra? If it has native support (in XP / Vista / 7), then I vote for removing the Windows port.

You just ship the game with the relevant DLLs and it works, more-or-less.

Hmmm. IMO that's almost as much hassle as maintaining the Windows port - someone, somewhere will complain that the shipped DLLs break something. Remember all the hassle with VB runtime DLLs back in Win98?

The DLLs don't get installed in any central location. They just exist near the executable file, which can then refer to them using a relative path.

At least, that's what I remember from my (very limited) Windows app development work.

Simple solution is to change the default font to a size where windows doesn't try to use one of its own - I use 8x12 for FA. IIRC this works (although starting up new V in Win7 for me it works anyway, so make of that what you will).

This. Works perfect on two Win7 machines that I've tested it on once I switch the font size
