Great to see lots of people enjoying Angband! This game has kicked serious ass for decades. I have played since the early 90s and am looking forward to killing Morgoth again.

I downloaded version 4.2.5 and found things very different immediately! What happened?

How do you search!? I can't find the damn hidden doors.

Active searching was removed in 4.1. Hidden doors are automatically detected when your character steps into a grid that's adjacent to the secret door. For a trap, your character gets one chance to detect it when your character first sees the grid with the trap. Mages have spells that can detect traps and secret doors.

The game is running great and it is awesome to see such an interest in it. I appreciate you taking so much time to work on it. Keep it up - your efforts make a difference.

Can you help me understand some things for vanilla?

What is the point of stealing from monsters?
Why did gp values change?
Why no starting chain mail and broadsword for warriors?
Why new classes?

Be patient with me. I am adjusting to a very different version of something I have loved for 3 decades. No matter how I come across, I admire you for taking up the project and value your time.

Stealing from monsters gets you items or gold - only stuff they would have dropped anyway, but sometimes you can burgle a monster you wouldn't be able to kill.

Not sure what you mean by gp values changing.

Starting gear changed back in about 3.3 because some players complained that the best thing to do as a warrior was to sell the sword and armour and buy a dagger.

New classes because they're fun

And sure, best thing to do was to sell the broadsword, buy some potions of healing, some scrolls of phase door, and a spear or rapier (or dagger for the weaklings.)

Gold values used to be lower, if I remember correctly. Dagger costs like 150gp now when it used to cost like 14gp. (might be incorrect memory but I was surprised at the gp when I started this version up.)

Probably the last time buy prices changed was when the Chr stat was removed, gold drop changed with no sell, which is an option changeable on character start up

My understand is that daggers went up in price because they are now an effective weapon for throwing at enemies. My understanding is also that Iron shots went up in price because they are now invulnerable to the elements of the dungeon.
