    Understanding to-hit values

I know this is a really basic question, but what is the scale of to-hit values on the character description page - my to-hit value seems to go up the stronger I get, but I'm used to THAC0 from D&D, so these values are counter-intuitive to me. Thanks!

The higher your to-hit value is, the more accurate you are in combat.

      had the same problem.
in dnd there are only two factors, AC and your thaco roll + bonuses. in Angband there are 3, your roll + bonuses, and a weird combination of your level vs the mob level.
if you see the monster description it will say "you have X% chance to hit", but havibg a .. say, +15 bonus has a different effect on the percentage depending if you are level 1 trying to hit an orc, or level 50 trying to hit morgoth. the higher both your levels, the lower the effect of the +hit bonus. it's like if you had to total 20 THACO for an orc, or total 40 for a balrog, but still roll 1d20.

In Angband 4.1 and 4.2, the only attributes of the monster that matter for the melee to-hit calculation are the monster's armor class and whether or not the monster is visible. 5% of attacks will always miss and 12% will always hit. For the attacks that remain, the percent chance to hit is the three times the total of the two values from the "To-hit" line for melee on the first page of the character sheet (halve that if the monster is not visible) minus 2/3rds of the monster's armor class (in 4.2 a snaga has an armor class of 48; Morgoth has an armor class of 180). The percent hit chance shown in the monster lore does not include the 5% always miss and 12% always hit; it is 3 * to-hit total - 2/3rds monster armor class.
