The thread about speed got me thinking about the lucky finds I have had in games and which are the most useful. Which of these items would you most like to find on dungeon level 1? Which would give you the greatest advantage in a game?

Rod of Healing: too hard to use reliably by young characters, and is easily replaced by CCW potions anyway.
Staff of Banishment: too vulnerable to fire/acid attacks; limited charges.
Westernesse weapon: mostly useful for free action/see invisible, which aren't needed early on.
Telepathy cap: telepathy doesn't start being really useful until 1000' or so; with luck, you'll get Thranduil shortly thereafter.
Extra shots bow: actually fairly useful, but ring of speed does everything it does and more. -

I actually paused for a while between the RoS and the bow, before realising that the RoS turns every launcher into +1 shots until you start meeting fast monsters ..."Been away so long I hardly knew the place, gee it's good to be back home" - The BeatlesComment

SPEED totally. I don't use missiles early enough for the bow (although that would be sweet at maybe dlvl 15), I literally never end up using rods of healing, banishment is only kind of useful because it uses up your HP, and the dagger is good but not as good as an extra turn.Comment

yeah, that's not a fair question. boots of speed +2 or +3 is a more realistic find (i think i've found boots of speed +3 from wormtongue before), and something more comparable to the other items.
of course, if you're talking about DL 70 or 80, i'd most likely take the rod of healing. as nick said, they're so damn rare, and you almost always have decent speed and telepathy covered by that point.
but 10 extra speed is going to be super useful from the moment you set foot in the dungeon...Comment

Yeah, I'd go with telepathy in that case. I'm not especially heavily-reliant on ranged attacks, and I can't trust the rod to bail me out reliably. I'd be tempted by Westernesse, but frankly there's way more usable weapons out there than there are usable helmets.Comment

yeah a good cap of telepathy could conceivably last you through the whole game, and is particularly useful if you're playing a warrior or priest class.
at DL1, i think 3 speed is still preferable to a fancy dagger or a nice bow, though.Comment
