    Changing farmer Maggot's dogs color

There are only two kinds of C that @ is likely to encounter in the very first levels: jackals and farmer Maggot's dogs. Mixing them up could be problematic: while the former are usually harmless, the latter are a tough encounter at low levels. So, why are they the SAME COLOR?

They're pretty easy to pick out by the sound of doors crashing down, and the fact that they're alone.

Even still, yellow, orange, or dark brown would all distinguish them from Jackals. Wolves at dungeon level 10 are dark brown, and have comparable stats.

In HEAD (as of r1752) Magnate has made the dogs dark brown (like wolves).

i've had issues w/ the fact that carcharoth is the same color as hellhounds... i don't think i've ever lost any characters due to this, but have been often shocked to be hit with a nasty nether breath when i'm expecting some puny flames..
maybe that's part of the fun/danger, though

All uniques should be distinct from other monsters of the same letter. Carcharoth is now purple (r1756). Any others anyone wants to nominate for a change?

*All* uniques should purple, and no one else should be purple. Rename purple mushroom patches.

Nah, just replace 'em with a new unique: Princess Toadstool!

                ---
It's Princess Peach Toadstool, who is not actually a fruit OR a mushroom! She thinks you are one of Bowser's henchmen sent to kidnap her.

She moves at average speed. She resists slowing, confusion, disenchantment, and light. She is vulnerable to fire.

She can slap to stun for 2d2, scream to aggravate nearby monsters, and hit to steal mushrooms. She is magical, casting spells which heal self or shield self, about 1 time in 5. She has 10 hit points.

Killing this enemy, normally found in another castle at depths of 50 ft, is worth 0 points for a 1st level character. She usually drops 1d8 mushrooms.

Shelob and Ungoliant. Especially since they often have escorts of the same color.

Ariel, Vargo, Waldern and Quaker always come alone, just like the elementals

                  Itangast and Scatha

                  Eol, Maeglin

                  the ringwraiths.

                  Tselakus

Balrog of Moria, Gothmog and Lungorthin aren't such a big deal because you never see groups of balrogs without them...but still. I'd make lesser and greater balrogs a different color, they have the "unique" color now.

I think I got most of the ones I've ever confused for something else.

                      This.

Flavour-wise, it leaves a bit of a sour taste, especially with uniques directly related to a single element (ie the elementals, phoenix, smaug, scatha, etc) - but the gameplay would benefit hugely from this.

Now, this isn't really high priority I'd think, since my guess is that essentially everyone plays with the monster list subwindow open, but this change would make things more consistent and organized.

Besides, if the consensus is that purple isn't the right colour, we could change it to gold/yellow or bright green or any other light colour that really stands out on the black background and isn't used too much for other minsters.

At one time back in 2.7.9 I had most uniques mapped to alternate charachters. With extended ascii there are a lot of charachters to map to. Any vowel unique can get an accent mark of your choice. C uniques become Ç. The pheonix can be ß. Medusa can map to ń. p uniques can map handily to π. Either S or s uniques, whichever is more problematic, can map to Σ. Yeek uniques can be ˙. P uniques can if you're desperate to have an alternate mapping for them map to ₧. d or D uniques, or both, can use δ. T uniques can use Θ. In a pinch W uniques can use Ω. This frees most uniques to have any color they please while being both associated, at least loosly, with their parent letter, and being readily distinguished. A custom font could even use the extended charachters for some sort of systematic variant on the alphabet, eg inverted, and use that to mark uniques.
One Ring to rule them all. One Ring to bind them.
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness interrupt the movie.

I think that use of different color backgrounds could make it much easier to tell uniques apart. That way, they can all have whatever color makes sense for their uniques, but they also are very clearly different from regular enemies.
