Any chance he had picked your pocket while you weren't looking?

Good point but no, the urchin did not steal (from a 34th level hobbit ranger with 18/80 DEX). I checked the message log.

        LOL!

Amazing things have happened since the end of the Third Age and the dawn of the Information Age. You look at the monster description:

        A Master of Trickery...
Looking like any filthy street urchin, he can appeal for aid for Nigerian exiles, hawk potions of dubious rejuvenation, strip treasure off gold coin dispensers and use your account to shop for special items. He moves mind-bogglingly quickly (speed +200) and touches to steal gold from all adventurers in Middle Earth at once. He has a low chance of success but brings his victims untold financial woe.

Are you sure? Available versions now are 3.1.1beta and 3.1.2dev ... which build are you playing?

I just checked the code. Are you absolutely sure that he didn't get in a lucky steal, earlier in your visit to town? There's just no way that an urchin can drop gold (or anything else) unless he stole it from you.

Side note, how long is monster inventory kept in memory for stuff like this?

OK, here is the message log captured as an image. It is STILL possible that the urchin had stolen the money BEFORE these messages (I did not save more and did not notice the steal)...

I bet 14957 gold that he stole it from you earlier. It happens every now and then, especially when you're just steamrolling through town and not paying attention to any of the locals you mow down.

Yes, it must be it. But from a level 33 hobbit ranger with 18/80 DEX ... ? Hope this kind of probabilities hit the next time I play internet poker...

That kind of probability is no hand to speak of, not even a pair. Not the kind of luck I'd want in any poker game.

Forever, which means until you leave the level.

The chance at protecting your cash is just your level + a number based on your dex. Dex is on the right, and the bonus it gives you is on the left:
                          0 /* 3 */,
                          1 /* 4 */,
                          2 /* 5 */,
                          3 /* 6 */,
                          4 /* 7 */,
                          5 /* 8 */,
                          5 /* 9 */,
                          6 /* 10 */,
                          6 /* 11 */,
                          7 /* 12 */,
                          7 /* 13 */,
                          8 /* 14 */,
                          8 /* 15 */,
                          9 /* 16 */,
                          9 /* 17 */,
                          10 /* 18/00-18/09 */,
                          10 /* 18/10-18/19 */,
                          15 /* 18/20-18/29 */,
                          15 /* 18/30-18/39 */,
                          20 /* 18/40-18/49 */,
                          25 /* 18/50-18/59 */,
                          30 /* 18/60-18/69 */,
                          35 /* 18/70-18/79 */,
                          40 /* 18/80-18/89 */,
                          45 /* 18/90-18/99 */,
                          50 /* 18/100-18/109 */,
                          60 /* 18/110-18/119 */,
                          70 /* 18/120-18/129 */,
                          80 /* 18/130-18/139 */,
                          90 /* 18/140-18/149 */,
                          100 /* 18/150-18/220+ */

I think it used to be just based on Dex, which is why that goes 0-100. Anyway you had a 73% chance to block him so you had bad but not terrible luck.
