    There is no better way to make a lesson stick than to die from it!

      When it is important, you should target the monster rather than using a direction. If the monster is in a wall, the game will not let you target it.

        Point of order: can you hit it if the bolt/beam hits the wall where the critter is?

          For Adunaphel and some other wall passing nasties I usually leave the level (if I am not able to kill them - which is quite possible with enough speed, a good bow, and some arrows of slay undead). They are very dangerous and extremely quick. Adunaphel or things like a death dragon may follow you through half the level if you teleport them away.

            I don't quite like agressive powerdiving; I'm very ok diving at a rate somewhat like dlvl <= 3/2 clvl, tweaked by personal feelings of character power levels;
            But Eddie's Tales of the Bold are between the coolest things i've read here...

            Thank you again, Eddie (don't remember if i've already done that ^^)

            P.S.: Thanks for the very interesting read, Eddie.
            You don't ever need to run away (from a level) if you play a Paladin (in O, FA or Entro, dunno about V) and reach clvl 4x+ with good casting... Infinite *Destruction*! Ok, it's a way of avoiding the danger, but sending a message to (insert unique here) about what's waiting for them soon

              I wasn't even considering running away from a level, what I meant is that I don't run away from the room, or even from contact... yes, even with mages

                No. A monster in a wall is invulnerable, except to a tunneling attack or destruction. If you melee a visible [esp or SI or detection spell last turn] invisible opp in the wall, the code automatically interprets that as a tunneling attack.

                However, it can spell and breathe on you. IMO this is a bug.

                    Try playing a necromancer in Sangband ... (it's been toned down a bit, but it's still awesome)

                      There are many variants where you can become etherial. Usually it means playing with very low HP. (In Steamband, you can attack monsters from completely out of LOS, with at least one spell.)

                              Quoted for truth, emphasis, and all that jazz.

                              I get to see my lady in 8 days, and I'm going crazy with waiting, this game helps a lot.

                              The code is fun to look at too, although I'm used to OO stuff, so its been a bit confusing, but a good lesson in C. I'm going to write my own roguelike/bandlike game in C++ though, mostly as an excuse to learn it.

                              Sigh, 1 more semester in Uni too...

                              I had a win in V in 3 months, although I savescummed the hell out of the guy who did win, seriously he must have died over 500 or 600 times! So it really wasn't a win
