challenge type game that accommadates cheaters and non-cheaters about equally well

only rule is---no breaking into the code to adjust your character.

saving your file and re-loading(from where you left off) in case of death is allowed.

The game challenge---combination of standard mission---killing Morgoth COMBINED with a scavenger hunt

Winner is the player who kills Morgoth AND has a selection of artifacts that was randomly selected for all the players to obtain and put in their inventory in the city.

Artifacts to be selected at random---with
--1 artifacts commonly found in first ten levels
--1 artifacts typically found from levels 11-40
--2 artifacts typically found from levels 41 to 70
--2 artifacts typically found from levels 71 to 100

So in essence, each challenge involves 7 goals---killing Morgoth and acquiring 6 specified artifacts-

Further refinement would be that each player has to use a specified species type for each challenge---ie all players have to use a high elf in one challenge. A later challenge would require each player to use a half troll

Another refinement could be that each player has to use a specified character type for each challenge--ie all players have to use a mage in a challenge. While another challenge would require each character to be a rogue or some other type

Te utilization of collecting artifacts from a wide range of levels would result in all players having to be able to perform well in early game, middle game, end game(killing Morgoth at level 100) and then search game(to obtain any specified artifacts he hasn't already collected)

This type of challenge would take a while. And lends itself to any number of strategies a player would choose to employ

An example of a challenge of this type
each player to use a character which is a 'high elf ranger'. Each player can determine his starting stats and weaponry, etc as allowed by the game. And the character is to collect for placing in his home inventory to be declared winner(with also having defeated Morgoth) the following artifacts
    The Phial of Galadriel
    The Elfstone 'Elessar'
    The Bastard Sword 'Calris'
    The Light Crossbow 'Cubragol'
    The Cloak 'Colannon'
    The Adamantite Plate Mail 'Soulkeeper'

that is just an example....what would ensure equal footing at start of game is for a 6 players to each name a single artifact to be obtained

Anyone up for this type of game?

Seems a bit complicated to me. I am in favour of a competition where save-restoring is allowed, but I think it needs to be standardized. E.g. /everybody/ has the same level of save-scumming. I would suggest something like "Autosave every 1000 turns. Autosaves are backed up (and can be restarted from) other saves are killed when you die."

All those artifacts _and_ Morgoth seems a bit tough - maybe the first person to either get the artifacts or kill Morgoth?

It seems to me that the best strategy would be to kill Morgoth exactly as normal, then dive to the bottom of the dungeon and scum for vaults.

I went scumming for artifacts after killing Morgoth...and scummed from levels 101 thru 127....for a few days...and didn't find any artifacts. I started scumming in the levels from 90-91 and started finding some artifacts I hadn't picked up before. I believe that each artifact has a range of levels in which it is mainly found. If you go deeper than those levels the likelihood appears to decrease. That is why I put artifacts that are you can find in levels 10-20 on the list along with artifacts that are typically found in levels 90-100. This would force all players to thoroughly play most every level. As opposed to skipping thru levels 1-30 as fast as possible to get to lower levels. by putting phial of Galadrial on the list it would encourage players to play levels 1-30 to at least some degree of thoroughness.

A scavenger hunt should involve as many levels as possible. And would premium on players being able to play early game, middle , game, end game about equally well. And introduce a new phase to the game------scumming about thru all the levels to collect specific artifacts

This will just be random, and not a particular test of skill. The time to find a particular artifact is very high variance if it is rare. Perhaps that is what you want.

If you are interested in a test of skill, separate a subgroup of the artifacts into 6 groups, each containing enough to be moderately likely to appear, and demand one from each group.

I'd like to see save-file scumming stay where it is. That is, outside of the 'main-stream' competitions. Not to say that this couldn't be done, but since the ladder will be of little use in judging the results, much like this idea, it could easily be hosted here in the forum.

Aside from that, it may be better to hunt particular uniques, who's depth is a little easier to determine, rather than artifacts.

and is it possible to post the kill on the board via dump done as soon as you kill the unique?

              I can go for that

I also like the idea of collecting specified artifacts...Perhaps posting kills of uniques as well as collecting specified artifacts would be an interesting challenge

Since this is your idea, presumably, you will be the host. Competitors will submit character dumps to you. You will scan them for the relevant information. You will then post the results, updating the results as you see fit, by editing the first post of whatever thread you decide to run the competition from.

At least that's what I had in mind.
