I started a new character - Half-troll Rogue - and his first spell book is listed as:

    a) (illegible)
    b) (illegible)
    c) (illegible)
    d) Detect Monsters
    e) (illegible)
    f) (illegible)
    g) (illegible)
    h) Detect Monsters

The next most recent version I was playing was r1071 - and this was fine then so it must be a recent change.

EDIT: I think a edit file got messed up somewhere. When I downloaded the precompiled application, this stayed that way, but when I downloaded and compiled the source, it works again.

      * Make ID reveal all powers of an object, and remove *ID*. (#158)

Thank you. Thank you very much.
Somewhat related question: Have there been any changes to randart-creation ?

        Vote of thanks

I'd just like to reflect for a moment on what takkaria has achieved. He's rebuilt the angband development community from a fairly parlous state; he's sorted out all the GPL issues; Vanilla is close to once again being better than all the variants for interface and portability; and all this in less than two years as maintainer.

        Thank you.

Nick has a knack for expressing things very well! Thanks for the great game.

I've noticed this myself. Add my more crudely expressed kudos, congratulations, and gratitude to the ever growing font of goodwill flowing for our beneficent Mr. Sidwell.

Heartily agreed. I have one additional thanks: for taking the development more open, with a public bugtracker and keeping the source and all changes available. It makes collaboration and testing *so* much easier.

All kudos to Andrew, both for the new version and for the improved process that has led to it.

I hope that if people find bugs in this version or disagree with any changes made, that they will express their feelings in a polite and respectful manner.

All kudos also to those who have been involved in the GPL initiative - great that this has finally come to fruition.

And that means NPPAngband can follow suit and be under the GPL license as well.

Well done, Andrew! It seems that Angband has progressed progress in the last couple years than it has in the decade before that.

                      Yes, it's looking like a good 2009.

NPP - since you're here, are there any NPP features which may still be hoping to make it into 3.1/[V]-one-day? I haven't played NPP in a while, but it was one of my favorite variants.

4GAI would be my biggest choice. But that is a huge project.

Andrew - If/when you do decide to take that on, I think I have a couple ways that can drastically reduce the time it will take to do so.

But 4gai was a combination of a bunch of AI improvements, involving the movement code, monster mana, monster spell power, the process_monster function that determined the choice of whether the monster should move towards the player, away from the player, or spellcast, as well as decide which spell to cast. Then there were just a bunch of small things. It all depends on which parts of Leon Marrick's and Bahman Rabii (sp?) changes he wants to implement.

OK, upon further reading, NPP will be under the GPL license once I incorporate most of Andrew's Vanilla updates from the last couple years.

I would like to apologize to the English language for the above sentence. Hopefully you all knew what I meant.

had a Main Gauche (1d5) {magical} turn out to be a Main Gauche (1d5) (-5,-1). I thought only non-cursed would be magical?
Also had a magical whip turn out to be (-2,-2). They aren't cursed, but what gives?

I would love to see that in [V] one day.

Items with negative bonuses are no longer cursed by default. Thus, AFAIK, cursed means you can't take it off, but -2, -2 just means it's worse than average.

There is a lot of consternation about this class of "magically bad" items, but they are definitely not cursed.
