Monster memory is saved separately, so that should be fine. If you post a savefile here (zip it first to attach to the forum) I can try to fix it. Did anything odd happen before the problem?

Coincidentally, I got this error for the first time ever this past week, using 4.22.

I can't recover anything, I'm afraid - the savefile is all 0 bytes (while being the right sort of size for a regular savefile).

Can you give me any idea what the last thing that happened to this file before it failed to load was?

I think I saved game and then turned off my pc, maybe I did it too quickly

I was playing and my PC had a mind derp and froze. (this isn't something that happens regularly, maybe once a year or less)

Size 0 save file is bad. Angband really should make a temp save (sayPLAYER.tmp) , then delete the old save file then rename the temp. It's pretty standard practice.

It does do that, see savefile.c:395-436. Prior to 4.2.5, it was not recognizing errors from opening the temporary save so that may account for what happened here (I'm guessing this was with 4.1.3).

I normally don't care about my characters but i put a lot of effort into this guy.
I spent half hour to get rid of all of a pit of Tengu on DL11 to get an artifact light they had; which turned out to have +3 INT on it (mage!).

Then i got ESP super early and was already down to DL40+ waaaaaay before i normally do - i was actually hoping for a good turncount, as opposed to my normal sloth-like progression.

Uncompressing the file you posted gives 102080 bytes of zeros. If Nick can reconstruct your character from that, that would be miracle.
