It is a bit quirkier, I think. In some ways the natural rule would be to allow items to fall into chasms, but this might be too much of a disincentive to fight near them (ambitiously, you could track what's fallen into what chasm, to allow the player to dive in to get that amazing sword or chase the injured unique ...)

i lost taur-nu-fuin after a kemenrauko did the earthquake thing. is it possible that it was swallowed by a chasm that popped up, or could this already happen with rubble?Comment

I liked to think of dropping down a chasm as tumbling down a complex mess of branching crevices, similar to stairs, but I have to admit this is cool too!Comment

It could happen with rubble or walls too. If you dig through them, you can sometimes find the item under the rubble. The game engine doesn't explicitly support this (you aren't meant to be able to have objects and terrain co-existing), but Sil's code doesn't call for the object's deletion and it all seems to work.Comment

I've had items disappear underneath rubble a handful of times, and each time I was able to recover the item by digging the rubble off of it.You are on something strangeComment

I actually tried that in the situation in the screenshot. By the time I emptied the stave all I had achieved was blocking my own exit with solid wall and more chasms! I then had no choice then but to step into the abyss...Comment

Would a horn of blasting work? As far as I know they can only be aimed up or down, but if you could target the ceiling squares above the chasm, that might work. I guess freedom will shore up the chasm, but that is only at extreme ability.
I haven't had much time to explore this new version. But, does your speed level matter? If you were fast, would that satisfy the pre-requisite to jump, even if you didn't move the previous turn? You are on something strangeComment

Found a few minutes to try some things out. Even fast you can't jump from standing still. However, a horn of blasting did eventually clear out some chasms, but it made more chasms than it did rain rubble down in existing ones. Also, it took many tries. Not efficient. I had never actually aimed a horn of blasting up before... it seems to act like a rod of earthquakes. You are on something strangeComment

Edit: Leaping does count as a run-up, so after taking a leap you can leap again at a 45-degree angle. In Psi's screenshot you can hop around on the platforms in a circle.Comment
