Continuing in the vein of playing classic builds to see how 4.2.0 has changed them, Comp 224 is a Gnome Mage.

Gwarl - I'm playing my comp character on Angband live, and I note that when I cast Mana Channel a second time, I do not get the expected "Your mind feels even faster!" message. Does angband.live have an old version of player_timed.txt, or something? Can this be updated? -
The thing you're seeing is because the fastcasting effect from Mana Channel just doesn't have an "even faster" message. You can see this in player_timed.txt - FASTCAST doesn't have any on-increase message. One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne

So hmm... I'm charging a staff of sleep monsters to about 20 charges for 5 SPs. ... and then I'm tapping it for around 60 SPs... I'm going to suggest there might be a problem with mages in their current form. More generally there might be a problem with recharge which is super reliable.Comment

Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

I agree that Recharge is too reliable. I think it should probably have increasing chances to backfire depending on the level of the wand/staff. But at the very least, Tap should have a high chance ( (100 - CL)% ? something like that) of destroying the item.Comment

I wonder if the fact that it is a gnome mage is skewing the results given their extremely high device skills? What are the results for a human mage, the baseline middle ground?“We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. I haven't played Angband in years, and had a fun time with my gnome mages over the past week. The new version took some getting used to, but I think I learned to appreciate the direction that the game is taking. Some of the more tedious activities have been jettisoned without throwing off balance or feel.
I was a bit skeptical about the lack of selling items to the shops, but quickly realized that it liberated me to spend more of my energy exploring dungeons, hunting monsters, and searching for rare items that I actually wanted to use myself.
The identification system has taken a bit longer to adjust to... I'm still not sure if it improves game play, though maybe it does make sense thematically. The only way to identify scrolls and potions seems to be try reading/quaffing, which can be dangerous, or giving them to shopkeepers and buying them back if they're worthwhile, which can be expensive. I'm getting used to it, though.
Anyway, I should be fully recovered from the devastating loss of my most recent gnome by the time the next comp is announced. Looking forward to it!Oh, Mr. Speaker, I had underestimated the tenderness of the feelings of the members opposite.
