Competition 148

Hey folks,

Competition 148 is now available. It is a Sil 1.1.1 Edain Hador (Túrin Turambar!), who comes pre-equipped with Dodging, Flanking, Charge, amazing Str (4) and truly atrocious Con (2).

Note that Sil is a pretty short game, so we're only allocating a couple of weeks for this contest.

Comp 147 is still available, and will be wrapping up in less than 48 hours!

Thanks to Nick and pav for getting me up and running on the comp system, and for all the years of truly sadist... uh, I mean fun competitions! I'll be holding down the competition fort while Nick drinks greedily from the firehose of core Angband maintenance.

I'll probably mess this up more than a few times along the way, so please feel free to wantonly abuse me when that happens.

Interesting comp. Hard to survive early if you bump into sword spiders, too many orcs. I thought of doing this as something of a free hit focused build. Grab Zone of Control (mandatory with flanking) and perhaps pick up some sort of Great Spear and play around with that. Perhaps even some sort of light weapon with Momentum.

ZoC is usually my next stop after flanking and inner light when building these myself, but I've never gone so heavy on the strength and so light on the constitution before... except for my patented 5/1/1/1 "megabeefcake build". Alas, none of those survived the meatgrinder. My most promising one died at 600' to a single serpent breath

I imagine a good shield and longsword will get you through the early game, but beyond that, it should be interesting.

Uh...I just started playing the Compo 148 character just now. I guess that's too early. If I start now, can I submit when the Compo officially begins? Or do I have to start all over?

Nah go nuts. You can't officially upload dudes until the comp starts, but I'm sure you'll have time to kill at least a few dozen by then This can be a tough guy to start.

P.S. I tried (only taking momentum and sprinting as additional abilities). Died to Ulfangs archer escort at 500 ft. Is adding multiple chars to a competition possible?

Yeah, I expect most people who are legit trying to win this one will probably upload in excess of 5-10 dudes I think you might have to tick off the thing that says "don't overwrite this dude" in the chardump if you want to keep using the same name, but maybe that doesn't hold true for competition dumps?

Momentum before 500' is probably gutsy... I imagine he's going to want stuff to stay alive first. I would guess a heavy battle axe might be a good 1H weapon to slug around in the early game? No idea really. 2 Con is just... ouchy

I think I've gone through four already... one died to Gorgol, one entered a forge room with two brown molds and two more encountered sword spiders. They are soooo dangerous with so little HP. I am used to playing rather gung-ho and killing everything. This will be a challenge.

I stick to momentum, it is cool and cheap. All (2) attempts are uploaded to the competition, I didn't find the low constitution that dramatic with flanking - low perception / grace / will will be a pain soon.

Are still a pain in the rear...Interesting character much different than I would play, but its nice to see how flanking works.
