Ha! So that's what happened to me.

Deep in the dungeons (DL 25+) wounds cause also some permanent damage to stats.

Thanks, folks. Works. Don't know what I am *doing*, but it works :-).

[What is this 'broken back' effect?!]

It's actually a zip package with three savefiles! It doesn't have the .zip extension for some reason but you can rename it if necessary.

And that same savefile works for all three option characters, if saved with different names?

I should really put a readme.txt to the root game folder of non-Windows ports that explains how to run Mist on Linux or OS X... With clear instruction on loading savefiles, opening subwindows, etc.

To open a save file, first change the file name to 501.<name>, make sure the file is in lib/save, and use ./mist -u<name> with no space. So for Desdemona, change the file name to 501.Desdemona and use the command ./mist -uDesdemona

On Debian Linux I opened the savefile by moving it to the save folder and renaming it to 1000.Mikko where Mikko is my username and 1000 my user number. Then it opens automatically when I start the game with ./mist

On OS X the right name for the savefile is probably:
    Code:
    501.<name>
    See here for more info.

It's capped at 55%. Temporary resists can go higher. Resists probably don't protect items at all (I don't remember really).

    Mac port

The X-windows port at least *opens* if an X-terminal window is opened, and then I go to the mist directory and type ./mist

I don't know why the other posts suggest using ./angband; that does nothing for me, and there's no such file?

Anyway, haven't tried actually playing yet, but it does at least open the front screen

A little clarification about the three spellswords:

Desdemona has high DEX for three blows with a broad sword. Unlike the other spellswords, she's not that good with magic devices.

Regan has high STR for a broad axe and charge attacks. She has the highest Presence as well for the best Magic Device skill of the bunch, and a long spell range. All spellswords are bad at Perception, but Regan is the worst of all.

Rinaldo is the smart one with lowest fail rates and many known spells. He's the weakest melee fighter with "only" a long sword with two blows.

A tip: Wands of Magic Missile are now quite good weapons early on, but only for people with very high Magic Device skills! (Regan and perhaps Rinaldo qualify.)
