    Sorry to be picky here: if we're going to do that, presumably the criterion on statgain has to take into account permadrain from uninformed use of the One?

    I'm actually less stressed about this than I was when I didn't see myself ever getting >1 blow; now up to 5, the basic issue is just healing supplies. Pallando just cost me two !Heal and when I only have 5, that's a big deal.

    Maybe limit store services to maxed-stats and dlvl98, though?

          Is there anyway to keep he monster memory if you died and would like to play again? Or is that cheating?

            It would be difficult, since I hacked the code to have the extra food, the rod of mass identify, the one-ring and the phial generated at birth. You really can't re-create the character at startup without modifying the source code.

              BTW I noticed that if you start another character after one has died the towns people are alive, but the stores are still closed.

                Yes, I just banished the town at startup, but when the player returns to the town the townpeople will be generated as they normally are.

                  Follow-up to the 'One activation' sub-thread: stat maxes do NOT appear to be affected. That is, Rogo is still maxing out at self-stat of 18/100, not reduced by having been drained from misfiring activations.

                  I don't know whether that's the *intended* behavior, but it appears to be the reality. And that makes the One once again a useful card to have available, even at high level.

                  [dlvl 86, clvl 50, just maxed out the first stats: STR, INT and CON, all from one !Aug.]

                    The "One" is probably the most useful item in the game...I suspect that the game becomes easy after you round out your gear and get resist confusion.

                      Yes, sorry, I was unclear: I meant to say that _activation_ of the One is in fact a decent option, as opposed to being a major likelihood of permanent damage.

                        Yeah the One can kill off some early uniques or at least soften them up a bit.

                          Playing the competition character I decided to try playing with a mouse for the first time since the comp page lists enhanced mouse support as a plus for this variant and I found a couple odd things. Not sure if they are bugs or not, first clicking on a door does not open it and if you manually open it I could not click on the other side of it and have @ move past it, however once I clicked on @ and told him to run in the direction of the open door he did it properly and seems to run through open doors correctly now. However i still cannot get him to step on the stairs except by clicking @ and telling him to run in the direction of the stairs while standing right next to them. also is there a way to clear -more- messages with the mouse?

                              But to demonstrate how thoroughly Ewan dominated this comp, the combined turncount for both of his winners easily beat mine. I beleive if he tried he probaby could have worked in a third winner in less total combined turncount than my single one.
