OK, Competition 75 is officially finished now. Congrats to PowerDiver for a last minute win, and to everyone else for providing such excellent competition.

Wait .. I'm confused. The rules said the competition ends on the 15th; I assumed that meant that the competition *included* the 15th. Like when my boss says the deadline is Thursday, I give it to him on Thursday. Is the deadline 12:01am Prague time or something? I can accept the idea that just because it is still the 14th where I live doesn't count, but it is still the no later than the 15th anywhere right now.

That had been my impression as well. Not that I had a chance of passing up PowerDiver in the time remaining - indeed, I think it probably cheated him of a winner on the ladder, from the looks of it.

I agree, and not just because I have a horse in the race. For ease of understanding I'd recommend leaving the comp open until the 11:59 pm of whatever time zone gets there last. It would be better to leave it open too long, than cut it short, especially in a comp with this much activity. You could always kick the late submissions after the fact.

At the very least, it shouldn't end a a full day early for anyone .

EDIT: Well, I finally found a Rod of Illumination. You never really know how important those are until you have to keep going deeper without one. Fighting everything in the dark sucks. A Ring of STR +1 gave me a 3rd blow with my dagger, but then a stupidly wielded another ring of STR {sticky cursed -1} took it away. I don't think I had anything to gain, even if it was +5.

EDIT 10-15-2009: Well since I've nowhere else to post, I'm going to continue here because this character, at least as one of my attempts, has some promise, even more because of the ironman status. This CL22 entry below would have been the last offical entry had the competition continued to a more reasonable end point.

CL22 DL27 188890 turns. Doh! I added a {cursed} amulet of inertia to my equipment, so the ring of teleportation has become a regular part of my kit in order to minimize the loss of speed. On the plus side, the hard leather cap of thranduil (ESP and resist blind) has been great since I have no detect spells (still only have spell book 2). I did manage to find a rod of detect traps. Just killed Bullroarer and he dropped a few yet to be ID'd items so maybe I'll get lucky. Also a few detected items on my current DL that may prove helpful if I can manage to round them up. The mature green dragon is making me nervous.

CL24 DL31 219930 turns. Killed the dragon, though I had to flee and rest up once. Still no remove curse, but I did find a staff of perception that helped me cleaned out my pack a little. Also found the 1st spell book. CLW rocks, and the various detections open up a few more inventory slots. The resists still suck. I came across a crossbow to go with my bolts of flame, so for the first time I have a missile weapon. The pick of earthquakes (+8 tunneling, +8 STR) is awesome. Carving my own shortcuts through solid granite is now a regular occurrence, and it's a functional melee weapon as well.

CL25 DL35 261524 turns. The big find is the Rod of Treasure Location. I'm putting it to frequent use still searching of an anything of Remove Curse. My big blunder was losing all of my CCW, which was all healing I had. I needed to kill off some cold hounds, easy enough, but I didn't want my CCW's getting destroyed 1 by 1, so I stashed them in what I thought was a safe corner of the room. Everything was going as planned until I failed to kill one of the hounds and it fled. Before I could finish it, it breathed, and from it's (unforeseen) fleeing trajectory, destroyed all my potions. That leaves me completely vulnerable to confusion.

CL26 DL38 282827 turns. This is probably why I never beat this game. I've been walking around, risking my life searching for remove curse when I've had it all the while. It's in spell book 2, I just never bothered to learn it. Good thing I found it too, cause I would have been dead without it. Regaining my speed and third blow led me to an otherwise unattainable staff of perception. The staff let me ID my previously {tried} wand of teleport other. The wand of TO was my salvation after a law, or maybe a balance drake, breathed chaos and confused/hallucinated me. Managed to TO him on my 5th try with only 43 HP left, though the confusion wore off the very next turn. Here's another reason I never win. After almost being killed by the drake, I wanted revenge and spent some time searching for him, though I still had no solution for his confusion. I had him down to 2 stars in our original match up. I was sure I could take him given a second chance. Accidently ditched my Defender when I squelched {ego} weapons. It's a good thing I had the ring of free action. Will probably start diving a bit more quickly now.

CL28 DL51 339331 turns. Well, I did go quickly for a bit, but quickly got in over my head and had to put the brakes on again. A set of caesuts of power gave me a 4th blow with Dethanc and gave me the boost I needed to continue. The Rod of Identify is a godsend. Found the 3rd, 4th and 5th books though I didn't keep number 4. The staff of teleportation and rod/wands of TO make exploring less hazardous. Feeling confident now, let's see if it kills me. Resists still suck, but the armour is improving. I found my 4th pair of boots of slow decent, where's the speed?

CL32 DL59 387901 turns. Getting better all the time, but still no permanent speed. As I matter of fact, I just found my first staff of speed. Amulet of Wisdom +2 replaced regeneration. The mithril chain mail Belegennon (stealth +4, blink) is my walking around armour, but bronze dragon scale mail is my anti-confusion swap. The small metal shield of Thorin covers FA and acid immunity (my first immunity ever). Boots of stealth replaced the slow descent. The cloak of the magi also has plus stealth, so this is another of my stealthy paladins. So stealthy that I was able to sneak into a minor vault, collect loot, then leisurely kill off a horde of vrocks while their buddies napped peacefully. I use a {good} crossbow regularly, with blots of flame/frost, but I have a swap bow that stops XP drain, unfortunately no arrows. The pick of earthquakes is still AWSOME, quickly gaining on Dethanc's damage output. 2 sets of arftfact gloves found and left behind.

a few minutes later... I took the stairs down. Killed a sleeping Xaren. Eradicated a pack of fire and the earth hounds. I had cast detection and was moving off toward some tasty looking treasures when I stepped on a teleport trap. It must have been just outside of my trap detection range. It teleported me next to an ancient multi-hued dragon. He breathed. I died. Another full health insta-death. It appears I was wearing the wrong suit of armour. I put it on to fight the xaren, wasn't sure if he could confuse of not (and I just kind of assumed that the DSM had the 4 basic resists). Dump follows.

Sorry for the confusion. The way the page works is that when I'm setting up the competition, I put in a start date and an end date. There's an option for time, too, but I have been just leaving that as the default, which is 0:00:00. So this competition finished as soon as it was the 15th in Prague. I haven't really given it a great deal of thought before now - probably because this is the first competition that has come down to the wire.

As to what we do from here, I'm open to opinions. The time has to be relative to somewhere, and Prague seems as good a choice as any; it's possible, though that pav may be able to set it up so that it shows the user's date and time (like the forum does).

All opinions, comments, abuse etc welcome.

So after a little more research I'd vote for ending all comps using the time zone UTC-11 (American Samoa- Pago Pago) 11:59 PM, for no other reason than it's the very last time zone before the date line, so no would would be surprised by an early end.

If my calculations are correct, this would cause competitions to run 36 hours longer than they currently do. That's a sizable chunk of time.

Nothing to be done about it now I suppose, but I think that the cutoff should be the *end* of the specified day, rather than the begining. I don't particularly object to Prague time, as long as it is written down somewhere in the contest description. Personally, I'd opt for GMT as something approaching a standard, but realistically anything is fine as long as it is spelled out.

The competition end just caught me by surprise. I didn't have a realistic shot at winning or anything, but it would have only taken a few more minutes of play for me to advance to third, and with my name, that's something of a psychological victory (i.e. the "bron's" medal :-)

At the very least, we should have a coutdown clock - so you know how long you have left. There was even less point to me starting my latest char than I had thought...

...also wanted to say how much fun an ironman contest has been. Thoroughly enjoyed it. My thanks to whoever came up with this competition.

I like the countdown idea, and it's now implemented on the competition page.

I managed to push my character into a winner in another 200K turns:

unfortunate that I couldn't do it in time for the competition.

Much like Bron, I too managed a winner out of my competition character today. Took me a while, as I just moved into a new house and didn't have much time for Angbanding. This guy was actually a little overpowered - I was very cautious and farmed probably 150 wyrms for loot by abusing -Clone Monster.
