    Any non-Windows users in competition?

    Hello,

I have an idea brewing for the next competition, but the variant in question, entroband, only has a Windows compile available. This leads to two questions:

    1. Does anyone play the competition that is unable to play using a Windows binary? If so, what exact platform is used instead?

    2. If the answer to (1) is yes, then would anyone be willing to assist in taking the entroband 1.7.1 source and compiling it for the platform in (1)?

    Thanks!

I am the former entroband maintainer, but the source tree was inherited from hengband, which honestly was a mess as far as compiling things was concerned. I have a desktop and keyboard again, and am considering porting some entro features to a new [V] 3.1 variant this summer. I would be interested in having entroband played in the competition for some feedback from experts who may not have played it before: I searched back the previous ~20 competitions and did not notice a hengband or entroband entry.

I think Linux users are well used to and capable of compiling themselves, as long the source code exists. So you're basically asking if it's okay to throw Macists overboard

heh. I'd prefer not to throw them under the bus, but most Mac people have a VM or dual boot situation by now, I'd hope.

There was some difficulty a debian user had in compiling entro (see variants forum), so Linux may be a question mark here too. But if everyone who plays these comps can use Windows for *banding... no longer a problem! I suspect this may be the case.

I use Linux, and I know at least a couple of others do; I think pav's assessment is probably right, though. And there's always Wine.

It was last played in January 2006, I think. Competition 63 will be V3.1.0, and 64 will probably be NPP; I had no firm plans after that. How about coming up with a fairly advanced savefile and having a shortish (a couple of weeks) comp, maybe for 65? An advanced character might give you more useful feedback, too.

I tried compiling entroband under Linux (Arch64), and it compiled without any problems. However, it doesn't run for me, but hangs right after the intro screen with 100% CPU usage. It might be the same problem that Zangband has, with the random number generator being broken in a 64-bit Linux environment.
